Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18

Monday came faster than I wanted it to.

It always does.

The morning sun peeked through the blinds, golden and way too cheerful for how I felt. I lay there for a few seconds, staring at the ceiling, mentally preparing myself for the fact that in a few hours, I'd be signing a marriage license with a man I met not too long ago.

If someone had told me this was going to be my life a month ago, I'd have laughed probably out loud.

A soft knock on my door pulled me out of my thoughts.

"Are you awake?" Cyrus's voice came through, way too calm for someone who was about to fake-marry a woman for… whatever reasons rich people have.

"Unfortunately," I replied, sitting up. "Do you ever get nervous?"

"Not when I've had my morning coffee," he said, pushing the door open with a mug in hand. "But I brought you tea. Figured you'd need it more."

I blinked, surprised. "You made this?"

He smirked. "Relax. It's just hot water and leaves, not a science experiment."

Still, I took it. "Thanks."

He leaned against the doorframe, his shirt rolled at the sleeves, hair slightly messy in that infuriatingly perfect way. "You ready?"

"Define ready," I muttered, taking a sip.

He chuckled. "I'll take that as a no."

By the time we got to the registry office, my stomach was doing backflips.

Cyrus, on the other hand, looked like he owned the place. Calm, collected, hands in his pockets, like this was just another business deal.

"Relax," Cyrus said beside me as we took our seats. "You look like you're about to sit for an exam."

"I might as well be," I muttered. "A legal one."

He chuckled softly, choosing to say nothing else

The process itself didn't take long just a few signatures, a couple of awkward silences, and a very judgmental printer that refused to work at first.

When it was done, I stared at the paper in front of me.

Just like that, it was official — well, almost.

I blinked. "That's it? No fireworks? No dramatic music?"

He smirked. "Sorry, this isn't Vegas."

"Tragic."

Cyrus glanced at me. "Still think it's a questionable life choice?"

"Oh, absolutely," I said, sliding the pen back to him. "But at least it's an interesting one."

He laughed quietly, and for a brief moment, everything felt… weirdly normal.

Outside, the air felt lighter or maybe that was just me trying to breathe again.

Cyrus stretched his arms. "See? It's not so bad."

"Speak for yourself," I said. "My heart was in a committed relationship with panic."

He laughed. "Then it's official —we're both taken."

I gave him a deadpan look. "I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that."

"Sure you are," he said and unlocked the car for me.

He dropped me off at work after grabbing coffee on the way. I was halfway out of the car when he said, "Hey don't forget to eat lunch."

I raised an eyebrow. "You sound like my mother."

"Well at least how she would have sounded" I kept that thought to myself.

"I prefer 'concerned husband,'" he said smoothly.

I rolled my eyes so hard it hurt. "You really need a new hobby."

"Too late. You're mine now."

"Not legally yet," I shot back, shutting the door before he could say anything else.

Work was its usual chaos. I had a ton of paperwork and meetings to attend to everything I didn't do while I was whiling away time with Cyrus.

And I had no way of escaping them.

Just when I thought this was everything Mitchell brought in others.

If I was this busy. I wonder how Cyrus was doing.

"Ma'am you have a guest." I was startled by Michelle's voice. I didn't realise she had walked into my office.

"A guest?" I asked, and she nodded.

Who would come to see me for a while I thought about Cyrus but shook my head he was probably in his office filled with lots of paperwork like me, so it can't he him.

If not him them who?

"Let them in," I said she nodded, turning to leave after a while someone walked in. He was the last person I expected to see.

"It's good to see you again, Miss Hart," he said with a smile.

What was he doing here? Wasn't the supposed marriage over?
