Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 16: HIDDEN AGENDAS

The detectives and agents exchanged a knowing glance, their faces unreadable. "Well, Shadow Snake, it seems you've arrived just in time," Decker said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "We've got a few questions for your clients, and I think they're ready to cooperate."

Shadow Snake's smile was cold and calculating. "I'm afraid that's not possible, Detective. My clients will not be answering any more questions without their lawyer present."

Alvin's eyes narrowed. "You're their lawyer, aren't you? How convenient."

Shadow Snake's expression remained impassive. "I assure you, Detectives, my clients' rights will be protected."

Captain Larcon's voice was firm. "Shadow Snake, we've got enough evidence to put these guys away for a long time. You're not going to get them out of this one."

Shadow Snake's eyes glinted with amusement. "We'll see about that, Captain. I think you'll find that my clients are innocent until proven guilty."

"Don't make me laugh. Innocent until proven guilty. My Ass! We've got these guys by the balls. We have some CCTV footage that shows your clients driving around in David Wright's car an hour and a half after his death, also when they were arrested. An unregistered 9mm was found in Joshua Anderson's possession," Decker said with a sneer on his face.

"Also, let's not forget, two of your clients, Josa Hanson and Kyle Watson, are both wanted for murder, which means the other three are covering for them, making them all guilty of aiding and abetting fugitives," Alvin added.

After hearing this, Shadow Snake looked flustered on the surface, but he was secretly happy. "Excellent, so I know which one of them killed the young master now, but what I need to find out is why," Shadow Snake thought to himself.

"I...I need a moment with my client, Joshua Anderson," Shadow Snake said with a frown.

Alvin shrugged. "Fine, but we'll be right outside the door. You try anything funny, and we'll be in there in a heartbeat." Shadow Snake nodded, his eyes glinting with amusement. "I wouldn't have it any other way, Detectives."

As Shadow Snake entered the interrogation room with Joshua Anderson, the tension was palpable. The door closed behind them.

"Hello, Joshua Anderson... or should I call you Boss Josh?" Shadow Snake said in a low, menacing voice.

A cold chill ran down Boss Josh's spine. "Who...who are you?" he asked, slightly intimidated.

Shadow Snake fixed his cold eyes on Boss Josh. "Unfortunately for you, you're in no position to be asking questions. Just give me the answers I desire, and nothing more," he spoke with a cold tone of voice.

From inside the observation room, Detective Decker, Detective Alvin, Agent Wayne, and Agent Williams stood watching Shadow Snake intimidate Joshua Anderson.

"I don't get it, why is he trying to scare him? He has him as a client?" Alvin asked.

Just then, the door to the observation room burst open, and Sergeant Hanson walked in, breathing heavily, with Captain Larcon behind him, his face full of shock and panic.

"Alvin, Decker, we need you to get over to the hospital right now," Sergeant Hanson said.

"What's going on, Sergeant? Why do you look so flustered?" Decker asked with a calm composure.

"We just got a call from the governor's office, and it's not good. Someone has beaten Governor Wong's grandson to the point of death and left him in front of Dragon Scale General Hospital. Governor Wong wants to get a statement from him when he wakes up," Captain Larcon said.

"That is a lot to take in. We'll assist you guys as well," Agent Williams said.

Decker, Alvin, Agent Wayne, and Agent Williams sped to the hospital, sirens blaring, as they received the call about Governor Wong's grandson's condition.

As they arrived at the hospital, the squad cars screeched to a halt, and the agents jumped out, rushing towards the emergency room entrance. As they burst through the doors, they spotted a nurse standing by the reception desk, awaiting their arrival.

Decker and Alvin exchanged a look, their faces set with determination. Decker approached the nurse, holding up his badge. "Detectives Decker and Alvin, and Agents Wayne and Williams. We're here about Ethan Chen, Governor Wong's grandson."

The nurse, a middle-aged woman with a kind face, nodded gravely. "Yes, Detectives. I'm Nurse Johnson. Ethan was brought in a few minutes ago. He's in critical condition, severe trauma and injuries."

Alvin's eyes narrowed. "Who brought him in?"

Nurse Johnson hesitated, "Anonymous... We found him, beaten and left on the doorstep of the hospital."

Agent Williams frowned. "Anonymous? That's not gonna help us much."

Just then, Governor Wong burst into the waiting area, his face etched with worry and anger. "What's the status of my grandson?" he demanded, his eyes scanning the room.

Decker stepped forward, his expression sympathetic. "Governor Wong, we're doing everything we can to get information. The doctors are working on him right now."

Governor Wong's gaze hardened. "Find out who did this. I want answers, and I want them now."

Alvin nodded. "We're on it, Governor. We'll do everything we can to bring the perpetrators to justice."

As Governor Wong turned to speak with the hospital staff, Agent Wayne leaned in. "You think this is connected to David Wright's murder?"

Decker's expression was grim. "I don't think it's a coincidence. Let's get to work, see if we can find any leads."

The agents nodded, and the group began to coordinate their efforts, determined to uncover the truth behind Ethan Chen's hospitalization and its connection to the larger case.

Meanwhile, Rachel and Louis Chen walked into the hospital, their faces etched with worry and concern. They quickly scanned the waiting area and spotted Governor Wong, Rachel's father, pacing back and forth.

Rachel's expression transformed into one of anguish, and she rushed over to her father, tears welling up in her eyes. "Father! Oh, Father, how is Ethan? What's happened to my baby?" she exclaimed, her voice shaking with fake concern.

Governor Wong turned to his daughter, his eyes red-rimmed. "Rachel, I'm so sorry. I don't know much yet. The doctors are with him now."

Rachel buried her face in her father's chest, sobbing. "Oh, Father, I want my baby to be okay! Who could have done this to him?"

Louis Chen approached, his face grave. "Governor, we're devastated. We don't know what to think. Is there any update on Ethan's condition?"

Governor Wong shook his head. "Not yet, Louis. The doctors are doing everything they can."

Decker and Alvin exchanged a skeptical glance, watching the exchange. "Mr. and Mrs. Chen, we're investigating the incident. Can we have a word with you?" Decker asked, his tone firm but polite.

Rachel and Louis Chen turned to the detectives, their faces still etched with concern. "Of course, Detectives. We'll do anything to help find out who did this to our son," Louis said, his voice dripping with faux sincerity.

Alvin raised an eyebrow, sensing something wasn't quite right. "We'll need to ask you some questions. Can you tell us about Ethan's relationship with his family? Any enemies, anyone who might want to hurt him?"

Rachel and Louis Chen exchanged a nervous glance, before composing themselves. "Ethan's a good boy, Detectives. He doesn't have any enemies. We're a close-knit family. We can't think of anyone who would do this," Louis said, his voice steady.

Decker's eyes narrowed, sensing they were hiding something. "We'll need to investigate further. Please, if you think of anything, let us know."

As the detectives walked away, Rachel and Louis Chen's expressions changed, their eyes meeting in a fleeting moment of unease. They knew they were walking a thin line, and one wrong move could expose their family's dark secrets.

Louis whispered into his wife's ear, "They're looking at us like we are prime suspects, do you think they're onto us?"

Rachel replied in a hushed tone, "No, I don't think so. If they did, there'd be cops swarming all over the hospital, and we'd be dragged down to the police station for further questioning."

Louis nodded slightly, his eyes scanning the room. "Good. Let's keep our cool and play the grieving parents. We need to find out what Ethan's told them, if anything."

Rachel's eyes flashed with concern, but she kept her expression neutral. "I'll go check on him, see if I can get a word with the doctor."

As she walked away, Louis's gaze followed her, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios. He knew their family's empire was built on secrets and lies, and one misstep could bring it all crashing down.
