The sun was setting.
Under the last rays of twilight, Kevin stood up from the lawn in his garden.
He removed his sweat-soaked vest, walked into the bathroom in his room, drew the curtain out of habit, and quickly washed himself.
It had been a week since he transmigrated into this body.
Ever since then, his life had inexplicably become stable.
This gave him ample time to adjust his mindset and integrate into this unfamiliar world.
Eating, sleeping, exercising, and studying. That was the true reflection of his life these past few days.
Muscle memory and the inherited knowledge in his mind made studying medicine incredibly smooth, almost making him feel like a genius.
At the same time, he used the computer in his room to further understand all aspects of this world.
His greatest worry had not materialized. The original owner of this body was an orphan.
Although it felt heartless to think this way, he could not help but sigh. This situation was ideal for him.
Exercise, of course, went without saying. Both this body and the mysterious extraordinary energy made him almost addicted to training.
Turning on the TV to listen to the news, Kevin walked into the kitchen and began preparing dinner.
By the time he finished, night had already fallen.
The city's public security was not very good, at least worse than the city and country he had once lived in.
As soon as it got dark, very few pedestrians remained on the streets.
"Beep. Beep."
The sound of a car horn came from the street outside.
Hearing it, Kevin frowned, walked to the balcony, and looked down.
A van was parked at the entrance. Under the dim streetlights, he could see a man in the driver's seat waving at him.
Clearly, this man knew him.
Kevin's heart sank, and a bad premonition rose within him.
An acquaintance had come knocking.
He still could not completely escape the original owner's life.
A top student who graduated from a prestigious university. Even if he had been involved in criminal activities, he must have had people he knew.
To be honest, occupying someone else's body and facing unfamiliar "acquaintances" always made Kevin uncomfortable.
He went downstairs and opened the door.
"Kevin, quickly open the garage and let me hide. Damn it, those cops are really chasing hard."
The tall, thin man looked anxious. Seeing Kevin standing motionless, he clicked his tongue and got out of the car.
"Alright, alright, I'll do it myself."
Under Kevin's indifferent gaze, the man walked in without invitation, opened the garage door, and drove the van inside.
Police sirens could still be heard faintly in the distance.
Unlucky. It turned out to be an accomplice.
Kevin felt helpless. Since the original owner had engaged in criminal activity, it was only natural that he would have accomplices.
The man in front of him was clearly one of them. The van probably contained contraband, though Kevin did not know what exactly.
After parking, the tall, thin man walked over, lit a cigarette, and did not offer one to Kevin.
Clearly, he knew Kevin did not smoke. Their relationship must have been close.
"When did you get back? If I hadn't seen the lights on, I wouldn't have come here. Good thing you're home.
Otherwise, I'd have to stay at Barrel's place for a night, and he'd definitely take a cut of my goods."
He patted Kevin's arm and turned back toward the garage.
"Don't just stand there. If those damn cops come over, they'll question us."
Kevin followed silently.
At that moment, he was thinking about whether he should move away and completely sever all ties to the past.
The reason he had returned here was to awaken more memories of the original owner in a familiar place.
He had succeeded in that.
But it was obvious that the original owner's social circle was not suitable for him. The best choice might be to cut ties entirely and leave.
After all, even if he had not taken over this body, the original owner was already dead.
Starting over somewhere else might be the best option.
Otherwise, situations like tonight would keep happening.
While thinking, he entered the garage.
Soon, the distant police sirens approached, lingered for a moment, and then faded away.
"Mm. Mm."
The van suddenly shook, and a muffled sound came from inside.
The tall, thin man slapped the side of the vehicle and cursed, "Quiet down, or don't blame me for being rude."
The shaking stopped, but faint whimpers could still be heard.
Kevin's brows knitted tightly.
Living beings. And likely the worst kind of situation.
The tall, thin man seemed to notice Kevin's expression and forced a grin.
"Heh. A batch of high-grade goods I just acquired. They'll sell for a big price. Don't look so glum. I understand."
He gave an extremely lewd smile, patted Kevin's shoulder, and walked toward the back of the van.
He pulled open the rear door.
"Wuwu."
"Mm. Wuwu."
Young. Mature. Youthful. Childlike.
Six girls of different ages and appearances were tied up inside, crying.
They looked at the tall, thin man, then at Kevin, their eyes filled with terror.
"How about it? Pretty good, right? Best batch I've gotten in years."
He spoke with pride.
"You're lucky. I just got something top-quality that suits your taste yesterday. Today it's cheap for you. Kid, you hit the jackpot."
He climbed partially into the van and, amid terrified whimpers, dragged out a blonde girl with a petite frame.
She wore a red Lolita dress. Her golden twin ponytails gleamed under the light. Her small figure was delicate and well-proportioned, and her crystal-clear eyes were filled with terror and innocence.
He threw her onto the ground.
"How is it? Does she suit your taste? Don't say your brother doesn't take care of you. If you don't bring two bottles of good medicine to reward me, I won't let you enjoy this for free."
He continued talking to himself, oblivious to Kevin's increasingly grim expression.
So it was human trafficking.
And all of them were so young.
Even children.
This girl who looked barely into her teens…
Beast.
The original owner of this body had been even more disgusting than Kevin imagined.
The last trace of guilt he felt for taking over this body vanished completely.
"What are you doing?"
Kevin rushed forward.
