"It's so sweet!"
This was easily the best apple I'd ever tasted. The fruit's crisp sweetness filled my mouth; I couldn't stop taking large bites.
I lifted the apple to my mouth for another bite when I noticed Soren looking at me with a faint smile. It wasn't his mouth that smiled, but his eyes.
"Of course it's sweet. It's an apple..." Noelle said, rolling her eyes. "I'll never understand humans."
She turned her head in disdain before turning to look at Soren with a proud expression.
Soren ignored her and looked toward the orchard, where a group of workers were carefully picking ripe apples from the trees. Without a word, he started toward them.
"Alpha!" they greeted, bowing slightly.
"How is the harvest? I hear the apples are especially sweet this year," he said, glancing my way.
One of the men stepped forward and set his brimming basket at Soren's feet. "You're absolutely right, Alpha! The crop is rich, and the fruit sweeter than any year I can remember."
