Being back in Agrevia was oddly exciting and scary at the same time. Our car stopped at the gate of the Agrevia mansion.
For a moment, I just sat there, staring at the towering black iron gates that stood like a warning more than a welcome. The air was still, unnervingly so, and the mansion beyond the gates looked almost lifeless . The same sprawling walls I had grown up within now felt foreign. Cold. Like the place had forgotten me.
Kael sat beside me, his jaw set, eyes fixed straight ahead. His silence filled the space between us. It was thick, uncomfortable, but somehow grounding.
I hadn't known what to expect coming back here, but the reality of it hit harder than I imagined.
The memories, the effect of what had happened that day, it all came crawling back.
The car engine hummed softly until the driver finally cut it off. My heart pounded in my chest as the sound faded, leaving nothing but the steady rustle of the trees lining the driveway.
