The words died in my throat before I could voice them. My thoughts scattered like leaves in a storm, each question demanding attention while offering no clear starting point.
Someone had been planting false heirs throughout the North. But why? What drove them to such elaborate deception? Were they seeking control over our territory? Perhaps they wanted to monitor our every move from within our own walls.
Or maybe their goal was far more sinister. Maybe they intended to tear us apart from the inside.
The timing troubled me more than anything else. Why emerge now, after so many years of quiet?
If these supposed heirs were nothing but imposters, then who had positioned them so carefully? Could the same force behind our bloodline curse be orchestrating this elaborate scheme? My mind drifted to the witch Sister Vera had mentioned earlier.
Then another realization struck me with crushing force.
