Chapter 25 - Chapter 25

POV Cole

Earlier this morning that girl Chloe delivered me my new phone. I played nice while she overstayed her welcome blabbing and flirting I barely got a word in which fuck it didn't plan on making friends here anyway.

Most of this boring fucking day was spent with doctors and nurses coming in and out and setting up my new phone. Luckily, I was able to keep my same number and everything was backed up on iCloud. I texted with Rylie, Logan, and my dad here and there. I open the thread with Lex; her last text was from the night of the accident, and it said, "I'm so sorry."

Sorry about what though? I have texted her three times now asking about what she meant and why she isn't responding to me. My nerves have turned to anger and frustration as the time passes. I know Lex and that phone of hers is always attached to her so I know she's seen my messages.

I try to remain calm and rest as much as possible, physical therapy starts tomorrow and I want to crush it because the sooner I get my body back in order the sooner I can leave and the sooner I can get my life back.

It's nearing six o'clock when there's yet another knock on the door. It slowly opens and Jake's head peeks over the wood slab. I'm dumbfounded to see him, I know Rylie said he saw him last night but it never crossed my mind he'd come to see me.

"Yo, Carson, how you doing man?" Jake says coolly but his body language is tense.

"Morrison, what the fuck are you doing here dude?" I actually am happy to see a familiar face.

His body relaxes and visibly lets out a breath, "You look like shit."

I chuckle, "I feel like shit."

He fully walks into the room and sits on a navy blue chair opposite of my bed. He looks exactly the same way he did last time I saw him.

"Look man, I was there that night…" Jake starts. I try to straighten up on my bed but only shift a couple of inches because everything hurts. He was there that night? Before, during, or after the accident? I have so many questions. He could be the one with the answers I've been searching for.

"Man, I'm so sorry I didn't know it was you," he runs his fingers through his blonde shaggy hair.

"Can you just start from the beginning? I have no recollection of that night or much of anything that happened the days leading up."

He nods, "I was one of the paramedics there that night, we got a call about a lone motorcyclist accident off of Interstate 5. My unit was third on scene so you were already being worked on, I never got to physically see you other than just someone on a gurney. You were a John Doe for a week and if I had just paid a little more attention I could have been able to identify you."

That really gives me no concrete information that I was looking for but I feel for him so I won't press it anymore. He is guilty about something that was out of his control.

"Look Morrison, it's all good what difference would it have made anyway?" I watch him visibly relax more into his chair like he needed me to say those words to him.

We talk for a few awkward minutes until he stands up and announces that he's going to head out. He takes a couple of steps towards the door and turns back around placing his hands in his pockets.

"It was really nice to see you Cole, all this time we had animosity towards each other over Lex," he shakes his head in disbelief and chuckles, "And neither one of us got her, Who knew she'd end up with Rylie?"

And three…two..one… detonation clearance.

"What?!?"

"Wait, wait, wait!"

"What?!"

I really can't think of anything else to say it's just naturally what's coming out. Jake looks at me like I'm the one who threw him in off balance.

"Sit the fuck back down Morrison," I demand. He swallows hard and obeys to my orders.

"Lex is my girl, so what the fuck are you talking about?" I look at him expectantly and he looks like he wants to flee. I'm crippled right now so technically he can but he doesn't.

"I didn't know that," he whispers.

"So then tell me what the fuck you do know!" My blood is reaching the boiling point.

"Well..last night when I saw your group Lex and Rylie were holding hands, smiling at each other, and when they walked away after we talked for a minute he had his arm around her waist and kissed her head."

The only thing I see is red.

I take anything within reaching distance which happens to be a tray of uneaten food and chuck all of its contents at the wall just missing Jake's head. He ducks down and lands on the hospital floor.

"Cole, dude, calm down!" He yells out from below.

The monitor above me, no doubt because of my heart rate is doing that loud annoying beeping noise. Seconds later day shift nurse Nancy comes through the door looking less than thrilled at the mess I made.

Jake stands up rubbing the back of his neck, looking unsure of what steps to take next.

Nancy looks to him, "You should probably go honey."

The relief that washes over him is evident like I held him hostage, okay well maybe in part I did but that's beside the point.

"I'll see ya Cole," he offers before trying to escape the hellhole that I'm stuck in.

"Morrison!" I yell out one last time before he walks into the hallway.

He looks back at me wearily but I continue, I may have had beef with him back in the day but he came through for me more tonight than my own friends have in a while.

"Thank you."
