Chapter 12 - The interogation

I don't know how much time had passed before a guard arrived. I was still crying when I looked up at him. He looked scary, but a tiny spark of hope flickered inside me maybe he was here to tell me I could go home.

He opened the cell door and told me to come out. I did as he said. Then he gestured for me to follow.

I walked behind him quietly as he led me to that same man that handsome, infuriating bastard's office.

He was sitting in a chair, reading something, not even sparing me a glance. Without looking up, he told the guard to leave us alone.

Now I was really nervous. My hands trembled, my stomach twisted. Why am I here? I just want to go home. I swear I won't go to the market ever again.

Before I could even speak, tears began to roll down my cheeks.

He finally looked up at me still angry. He didn't say a word at first, just watched me as I stood there staring at the floor, crying silently.

Then, in a cold, steady voice, he said, "kneel down."

I did, feeling like a sad puppy.

"What's your relations with the black guard?" he asked flatly.

I didn't look at him. My tears were still falling, and my mind was blank. I had no idea what to say. His question only made me more anxious.

Suddenly, he slammed his hands on the table. The loud noise made me flinch so hard I almost screamed. My heart was pounding -ו could barely breathe.

He started walking toward me slowly, and with every step, I felt smaller. I was on the verge of fainting. What is wrong with this man?

I hadn't done anything! I was looking around the market but that was not a crime- and here I was, being treated like a criminal. There was something about this man the way he moved, the way he looked at you that made you feel pressured, trapped, and helpless.

He stood right in front of me and said, "I asked you something."

I was still crying but managed to whisper, "I don't know." My voice was so weak I wasn't even sure he heard me.

He asked again, more firmly this time, "What were you doing in the market?"

With the same trembling voice, I replied, "I

was just there to look around."Then why did you stop me?" he demanded.

And that's when it hit me. Oh my God... that's why he was angry. Because I stopped him in the middle of the road. He thought I did it on purpose.

My eyes widened as realization dawned on me. My throat tightened. I looked at him, tears blurring my vision. My eyes were swollen and sore, but I spoke anyway.

"I didn't... I swear I didn't!" I cried, voice cracking.

Almost by reflex, I pinched my throat something I always did when swearing. "I was just trying to catch the lamb." I said to myself he saw that didn't he.

At that moment, a guard entered the room. He leaned down and whispered something into that bastard's ear. The man nodded slightly and gestured for him to leave.

Then his cold gaze shifted back to me. "What's your name?" he asked.

I looked down at my feet again, my voice trembling. "Yang... Yang Xueyii."

He nodded and sit back into his chair, his expression unreadable.

"Do you know why you're here?" he asked next.

At first, I shook my head. But then, something clicked in my mind. I slowly nodded, lifting my eyes to meet his. He looked slightly puzzled by my reaction, but before he could say a word I spoke quickly - afraid he might interrupt

"I know I shouldn't have stood in the middle of the road," I said, my voice rushed and desperate. "But you have to believe me I was just trying to catch that lamb! I didn't even notice you. I swear, I didn't."

My words tumbled out all at once. I felt like if I didn't explain myself now, he'd throw me back in that cell without a second thought.

He looked at me silently for a moment, eyes full of thoughts I couldn't read. The air between us grew heavy, and I held my breath, waiting for him to speak.

Finally, he stood up, his tone calm but firm.

"You can leave," he said. "Your brother is waiting for you outside."

For a moment, I just stared at him, frozen in disbelief. He believed me? Just like that?

A smile spread across my face before I could stop it. Oh... maybe he's not such a bad person after all.

I smiled at him wholeheartedly. "Thank you so much, Inspector. You're not a bad officer after all. I really hope you get a promotion soon."

I turned around, excitement bubbling inside me as I headed toward the door. Freedom was just a few steps away - but then his voice stopped me.

"Wait."

I froze. My heart skipped a beat, panic raising in my chest. What now?
