Kimmie returns quietly, but the moment the door opens, I feel it. Her soft steps stop, and she just stands there. I don't look up, I keep staring at the dark corner of my room, the one spot my eyes have been fixed on since Rex left me with those confusing words.
"Raya?" Kimmie's voice breaks gently through the silence. "What happened? Are you fine? Why are you sitting like that?"
I blink and force myself out of the fog in my head. "Kimmie… I wanted to talk to you."
"Talk to me about what?" She comes closer, her face full of worry.
I swallow, unable to force the right words out. "Kimmie… can I trust you?"
"Hundred percent. You can trust me, Raya."Her answer is instant, no pause, no doubt.
I look at her, not with suspicion, not with fear but with the helpless need of someone who has run out of options.
"Have I given you any reason not to trust me?" she asks.
I shake my head slowly. "No… you haven't. And that's why I need you. I need you to help me do something important."
