"It really is quite powerful. If I'm not mistaken, the shell had already broken the sound barrier as it left the barrel. At that speed, if I had been standing where old Zhao was just now, I probably wouldn't have been able to dodge it either."
Flander carefully observed the railgun and continued, "In the academy, besides Zhao and me, anyone else trying to take that attack without injury would have to put in a lot of effort."
The other teachers nodded in agreement. However, as Oscar and Aos Qin's teacher, Shao Xin spoke up:
"This thing isn't without flaws.
First, it's too cumbersome. Even a strength-type Soul Master at first or second ring wouldn't be able to assemble it alone.
Second, the preparation time is too long. It might work for ambushing a target with a fixed position, but it can't be used as a conventional weapon."
"Yes, teacher. The railgun isn't suitable for everyday skirmishes. It's better suited for city defense or assault," Aos Qin said, showing he had already considered this.
"For this problem, there's a solution. The railgun can be reduced in size to a level I can operate alone with my current strength, but it requires advanced Soul Guidance Device production skills and high-level inscribed arrays. So, making it properly will have to wait until I reach Soul Lord level."
"Alright, we get it — you've thought it through. Old Shao is just showing off to us," interrupted Teacher Li Yusong, instantly prompting the teachers to collectively mock Shao Xin.
As students and juniors, Aos Qin and Oscar didn't dare to interject in this teacher banter. Flander was the first to remember that Oscar and Aos Qin still had one more Soul Guidance Device to display, ending the little farce.
Aos Qin then took out the foam-metal Soul Guidance Device stored in his backpack.
Looking at the cube-shaped metal block Aos Qin placed on the ground, the teachers were somewhat puzzled. Only when Aos Qin pressed his palm into a shallow groove on the metal and infused it with Soul Power did the changes begin.
Foam metal actually requires very little Soul Power to expand or contract — roughly the same as the Soul Power Aos Qin spent making five hamburgers.
When Aos Qin stepped back from where he infused the Soul Power, everyone noticed the metal cube steadily expanding. Oscar and Aos Qin didn't plan to move away, knowing there was no danger.
After about three minutes, the foam metal finished expanding, forming a small T-shaped house, leaving the teachers and Ma Hongjun amazed.
Oscar, slightly proud, walked up the little stairs, opened the door, and gestured for everyone to enter. He led the teachers through the house, explaining the design intent, the flaws of foam metal, and the ways to compensate for them.
After exiting the house, the teachers agreed that this was far superior to tents for outdoor use. Shao Xin, feeling pleased, offered to take charge of the supporting Soul Guidance Devices needed for the foam-metal house, keeping it with him so the devices he made could be compatible.
Indeed, the two Soul Guidance Devices Oscar and Aos Qin created over the vacation satisfied the teachers, leaving no reason for any "post-harvest reckoning."
With the excitement over, everyone returned home or to their own tasks. Before Flander took Ma Hongjun away, they agreed that once Ma Hongjun broke through to level ten, he would go with Oscar and Aos Qin to hunt Soul Rings.
Originally, their eldest uncle was going to tag along, but he broke through earlier than expected. With some money in hand, he hired someone to catch a suitable century-old Soul Beast, brought it alive to the village, and then killed it to absorb its Soul Ring.
In the following time, Ma Hongjun focused on cultivating his Soul Power to break through to level ten as soon as possible.
Oscar and Aos Qin were also busy. Meditation never stopped. In addition, they prepared refining metals for upgrading Soul Guidance Devices after reaching Great Soul Master level. The remaining time was spent helping Cohen improve the control of his Soul Skills.
Incidentally, Aos Qin's equipment inventory also added some weapons:
First, an RPG launcher with ammunition. To simplify production, projectile initial speed and range relied entirely on the launcher, while the ammo itself only had an inscribed Fire Element explosion array.
Second, two M1911 pistols. Aos Qin increased the magazine capacity to 11 rounds. The bullets didn't focus on physical penetration but concentrated elemental damage — frost for slowing and fire for burning. Again, initial speed and range depended entirely on the pistol itself.
One week after school began, Ma Hongjun experienced another Evil Fire eruption and finally broke through to level ten Soul Power. Flander then decided they would depart for the Star Dou Forest in two days.
Since the duration of the journey was uncertain, Oscar and Aos Qin informed their parents on the day of departure, stayed one night at home with Cohen accompanying their parents, and returned to the dormitory the next night to leave early the following morning.
At sunrise, Flander, Shao Xin, Ma Hongjun, and the brothers Oscar and Aos Qin were ready to depart.
Thanks to the Soul Guidance Devices, Shao Xin, a food-type Soul Master, planned to personally help his disciples hunt Soul Rings. His mech had been upgraded to level seven, giving him no pressure when facing century- or millennium-old Soul Beasts at the forest edge.
Flying Soul Guidance Devices greatly reduced travel time. Oscar and Aos Qin equipped theirs, attaching the tether lines to Shao Xin. He would pull them through the air, requiring no Soul Power from them, only controlling their own flight direction to avoid stalling.
As for Ma Hongjun, without a flying device, Flander carried him while flying. Though Flander could fly naturally, he still used a flying Soul Guidance Device to conserve Soul Power.
Ascending and accelerating, facing strong wind resistance, Oscar and Aos Qin donned their Soul Guidance armor components — helmet, faceplate, chest and back plates linked with the belt. Activating the Soul Guidance defense shield, they finally felt they could breathe.
They simultaneously sent a Soul Connection request. Once linked, Aos Qin said indignantly:
"Next time we upgrade the flying Soul Guidance Device, I'll add a feature to block wind at high speed."
Oscar: "Same here."
The brothers silently criticized Flander. Shao Xin hadn't planned to fly this fast — he accelerated only because Flander surged ahead, forcing Shao Xin to speed up to catch him, resulting in a high-difficulty aerial armor maneuver for the brothers.
Still, this cut the travel time significantly. By noon, the five reached the Star Dou Forest entrance. Flander didn't stop at the town, clearly intending to enter the forest directly.
As soon as the flying devices landed, Oscar and Aos Qin retracted theirs and their armor, sitting cross-legged to meditate and restore Soul Power.
Even without using the Soul Power stored in the belt device, merely maintaining the defense shields consumed all of their Soul Power. This was after consuming three roasted cheese beef burgers and a large sausage each during the journey.
Ma Hongjun, protected by Flander's Soul Power, was fine but still urged to meditate and adjust his state.
Flander and Shao Xin rested briefly and began preparing lunch. With Soul Guidance Devices, having a hot meal outdoors was no longer difficult.
Two hours later, fully restored and fed, the five were ready to enter the forest. Thanks to the foam-metal house, overnighting outdoors was no longer a hardship, so there was no need to rush morning entry for extra search time.
Helmets down, faceplates closed, chest and back plates linked with the belt and helmet/faceplate, Soul Power circulated to ensure the devices worked, gauntlets and boots on, two pistols positioned for immediate draw — Aos Qin's preparations before entering the Star Dou Forest were complete.
Oscar similarly equipped his armor cautiously. Ma Hongjun, now familiar with Soul Guidance Devices after a week, no longer found the scene novel.
He held a level-one jungle knife Soul Guidance Device and would be responsible for clearing the path, just as Oscar and Aos Qin had two years ago.
When he got tired, Oscar and Aos Qin would take over. The afternoon until nightfall would mainly be spent venturing deeper into the forest and letting him experience the process of acquiring Soul Rings, without rushing to find suitable Soul Beasts.
