CHAPTER 48
~Xena's POV~
I did not get the chance to respond to Xade's question before the call cut. I stood there for a second after the call ended.
"Little mouse," I muttered under my breath.
I didn't know whether to be irritated or… unsettled.
Either way, I went, took a turn and reentered the building.
The walk to his office felt longer than usual. Every step gave me time to overthink. About Xaiden, and the lady, Tasha. About the way Xade had looked at me earlier, like something had slipped out of his control.
When I reached his door, I knocked once, waited, then knocked a second time before pushing it open.
Xade was already inside, jacket off, sleeves rolled up. He wasn't looking at the city this time. He was standing by his desk waiting for me.
"Close the door," he said gently.
I did. I stayed where I was, arms folding instinctively, but I did not cross the space to sit opposite him. "You said it was important."
"It is."
