Brand conjured Dark Flame in his palm, and the writhing shadows twisted around his fingers, pulsing with dangerous energy. He pressed his hand against the Worm Guardian's head and let the flame seep through the plated hide. For a brief moment, the creature's body vibrated beneath his touch. Then, with a shriek that tore through the chamber, the Guardian recoiled, and its scales tightened as it curled into itself—a massive, wriggling ball of agony.
The pressure was immediate.
The Worm Guardian's body convulsed and coiled around him, attempting to crush him. Its muscles tightened like an iron whip.
Brand gritted his teeth and felt his ribs strain. The darkness pressed in, and the suffocating grip was too tight.
He needed to move. Now.
