Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Adrian's Pov,

Adrian sipped a glass of red wine as he watched in the city from his bedroom. It was truly a beautiful city, even more so when it obeyed him.

He loosened his tie, still unable to place his finger on what made him feel so uncomfortable.

For some strange reason, he felt like something bad was about to happen, which was even more ridiculous because bad things didn't happen to people like him. It just didn't.

His company shares had fluctuated another three percent, to some it wasn't much, but to him, it was a whole lot. Wolfe's legacy had been around for a long time, he had made sure of it.

He had made the right investments, built this company on his back, and instead of his shares increasing, they began to decrease every day.

A knock on his door broke him out of his thoughts, he turned just in time for Celeste to walk in, still dressed in one of his shirts. She had a smile on, mischievousness plain on her face as she made her way to him.

He used to love that look of mischief in her eyes, and the way her lips would curve smugly as if she knew the power she wielded over him, now whenever he saw it, it irritated him beyond explanation.

"You didn't come back to bed," She said as she sat on his desk, staring up at him, the mischief still clear as day in her eyes.

"I was working, you know that," He said curtly, not wanting to prolong the conversation more than was needed, if he was honest he'd say he didn't want to have a conversation with her at all, but when was the last time he said the truth? He couldn't even remember.

"You're always working, maybe if you weren't so obsessed with….." She said and Adrian's eyes shot to her, glaring holes into her.

"Obsessed with what?" He snapped, since she refused to take the message that he didn't want to speak to anyone at the moment, he would simply do what she had basically been begging for, vent his anger on her.

"Obsessed with keeping my company afloat? Obsessed with making sure this company continues to grow while it seems everyone works overtime to tear it apart?" He said, unsure why he had even said that since he couldn't name one person he thought was working to tear the company apart, did the loss of those shares really affect him this much to start saying whatever?

"Oh by everyone you mean your wife, correct?" Celeste replied and when his gaze snapped to hers, she smirked.

"What the hell do you mean by that?" He bellowed, there was no way someone like Isla could ever do that. She was a saint, an intelligent one which was one of the reasons he married her.

"Oh, so you don't know what your wife has been up to?" She continued, still smirking as she hopped off his table and began going through his bookshelf. When she turned around and saw he was still staring, she giggled and continued looking at the books, caressing each one.

A vein pulsed at his temple, irritation was a word too mild to describe how he felt, "Ex-wife, soon-to-be. And she can't touch this company, she helped build it, whatever you think you know you are wrong so let it go," He said, something in him wanted so bad to believe Celeste was telling a lie.

There was a reason they were together, both of them were the same, selfless, lying, backstabbers.

He was no stranger to Celeste's tendencies to tell more lies than truths, but that didn't mean he ignored all that came out of her mouth though, and this seemed like one of those ones where he couldn't ignore it.

He was drawn out of his thoughts when Celeste laughed softly, "Oh honey, you really have no idea do you? She's changed." She stated simply and he continued to stare at her, his brain not moving fast enough to process what it was she was saying.

He remembered how she had screamed and put him in his place earlier at the office when he asked where she had been, he had never seen her like that, that look in her eyes had both intrigued and scared him. Had he pushed her to her breaking point she would want to destroy him? And a company she helped build?

He frowned, "What do you mean?"

"I mean she hasn't been the quiet little shadow you've been used to all these years. I know my sister, she would never dare speak to strangers before, but now she has been seen multiple times at different high-profile events, ones you haven't even gotten invited to! She's making friends and acquaintances, she doesn't need you for that!" Celeste said, all amusement and mischief gone from her eyes, what he saw was confusion, a little bit of fear, and a lot of rage, one he was sure matched the one he was currently feeling.

"So what if she is attending these events? She still works for Wolfe's, all contacts she is making will be useful for us in the long run," he said, his voice lower, almost like he knew whatever he was about to find out was way more than had been said.

"Oh I don't think so darling, have you heard of the name, 'Mira Holdings'?" Celeste asked and Adrian racked his brain for as long as he could before he came up short.

"Well, it is a name that has been in the business scene these past few days, guess whose middle name is Mira?" Celeste said and Adrian froze. No matter how much Celeste said, it still didn't feel like enough evidence that it was Mira behind this all.

"So some new busy comes into the scene and happens to have the same name as Mira, it could mean whatever Celeste," He said and she stared at him, shocked, most likely at how stupid he was choosing to be.

"You can't be that blind surely? How much more do I need to spell it out for you? Take it or leave it, you've trained Isla or should I say Mira, much better than you think, and treated her much worse than you remember, and it has all come back to bite you in the ass," She stated, her signature smug smile back in place as she made her way to the door, turning once more to smirk at him before she slipped out.

Adrian stood there staring at the door for long after she left, could all of this be true?
