The thought echoed through his brain, arriving so abruptly that Kenneth nearly sat up straighter, his muscles tightening and contracting as he made sense of those two words. Words he never thought he'd ever conjure up. Not in this world.
He stared at the window, his reflection faintly visible in the dark glass.
What if that was what he'd sensed?
Not hostility. Not danger, exactly. Something far more familiar and infinitely more unsettling.
Recognition.
No, that wasn't quite right. He hadn't recognized the man. He'd never seen him before in his life. But there had been a peculiar quality to his presence, an almost imperceptible disconnect between the man and the world around him. As though he were standing on the wrong side of an invisible boundary, watching a life that didn't entirely belong to him.
Kenneth knew that feeling.
He'd lived with it for nearly a year.
