ALEX'S POINT OF VIEW
The doctor's words hung in the air like smoke. Pregnant. Five weeks. Mother and baby are stable.
I couldn't move. Couldn't process what I'd just heard. Everyone around me seemed frozen too, caught in the same moment of shock.
My mother's hands went to her chest, her eyes filling with tears. But I couldn't tell if they were tears of joy or worry or some combination of both. My father stood beside her, his expression unreadable. Isabelle had her hands over her mouth.
Eva was still crying, but something had shifted in the sound. Blake looked like someone had knocked the wind out of him. Nathan and Ella stood quietly near the door.
"Can we see her now?" My mother asked, her voice small.
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. The doctor had said room 412. I started walking and everyone followed.
