Chapter 37 - Oversalted

It wasn't until I felt him go rigid that I realized I'd probably crossed a line again. My arms dropped from around him, and I took a small step back, heat creeping up my neck.

I grimaced, staring at the floor. Then, cautiously, I glanced up at him.

He was watching me, his face unreadable, but not unkind.

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

"Why?" he murmured as he walked further into the room.

I turned with him, watching as he crossed to the window. He drew back the curtain, peered outside for a moment, then let it fall shut again. When he turned to face me, the light cast half his face in shadow.

"You told me I couldn't touch you when I tried to… last time," I said, my voice quiet, cheeks flaming. "On Halloween. I mean."

I didn't dare add the rest of how I'd tried to undress him, how I'd been too lost in the moment, too overwhelmed by everything.

He nodded, his gaze never leaving mine. "I did," he said. "I'm glad you remember."
