I watched Jenifer's car vanish around the bend before facing Lorelei.
"I don't know," I replied sharply, pushing past her toward my own vehicle to follow.
Lorelei's foot hit the ground in frustration at my cold response, but she hadn't come here for confrontation—something far more urgent demanded her attention.

While Carl handled the police coordination, Lorelei edged closer, straining to hear.
"Officer, my apologies. One kidnapper is deceased. The remaining two are ready for transfer," Carl reported with composed authority.
"The body remains near the cliff. My team will aid in retrieval. Should your investigation require assistance, the Zach family stands ready to cooperate."
Two bound kidnappers were escorted forward as he spoke.
Lorelei's eyes darted toward them, and a wave of relief swept through her.
Her contact among the kidnappers was dead. The trail leading back to her had been severed forever.
