Chapter 13 - THE INVESTIGATION

Rick and Thomas looked at each other with Thomas holding a pale face.

Rick looked as though he was not troubled by the proceedings and stayed calm.

"Why am I in handcuffs?", Rick questioned the police officer behind him hoping for a swift response.

The officer grinned.

"You are not being arrested, just brought here for questioning".

Rick gave off a sigh and continued walking.

Finally, Rick had reached the chair where opposite him sat the questioning official in charge of dealing with Rick.

Rick sat down with a face as though he was about to take a nice shower.

Not a single flinch.

"You were at the scene of the crime when it took place. Can you tell me what happened".

"Well, I was in my room with my baby when I heard my wife screaming. I rushed outside to see what it was only to realise that my wife had being punctured in the rib.

She wasn't responding to my questions.

She just groaned on the floor. This was not as bad as the things I faced in the union so I grabbed a first aid and began treating her", Rick carefully and detailed explained, without any interruption.

The questioning officer took out a note and a pen and wrote a key point he had noticed from the statement.

'He was a union member', he mumbled to himself.

'Best to keep an eye on him'.

Rick realized the sudden change of expression of the questioning officer as well as the urgency to carry his notebook.

'Why is he so prudent? Was it something I said', Rick asked himself, to this he got no answer to.

Rick waited a bit longer, smirked at the scene and continued.

"The ambulance and police were quick to arrive and I received praise for giving the immediate treatment to Mrs. Rick that she needed---".

Rick halted before continuing again as he noticed the firm right hand of the questioning officer gesturing to hault his vocals.

Soon enough, the questioning officer dragged a few police officers into a confined space to speak to them in private.

" Carry him to custody. We need to get as much information as we can out of him", the questioning officer announced.

Wosh, the questioning officer was one of the most successful officers to the police department.

He has stayed there for eight years.

In that time, he had revealed 12 crimes out of the seventeen he had been booked to question.

He got promoted to being a questioning officer. The position he occupied in the department was not one favourable to him.

He came to the department as a janitor.

He worked the afternoon shifts day after day.

It was one day, while he worked that he spotted one of the employees stealing confiscated money from the department.

The employee, as Wosh quoted, 'took both cash and online money'. After investigation, the man was caught and sent to trial where he was asked to pay back all the money he stole, which equalled up to hundreds of thousands plus serve a few weeks in prison.

Wosh was immediately promoted to questioning officer by the head of the department as all the other positions were occupied by more qualified people.

He stayed as a questioning officer for six years, meaning that he was a janitor for two years.

As suggested, Rick was carried into the waiting area to await further instructions.

"What am I doing here. I'm innocent! You can't do this to me", Rick shouted as the police officers slowly left the scene.

Rick calm nature soon got jeperdized by the thought of his wife who was rushed to a hospital.

At that period in time he had no idea whether she was still dead or alive.

'I can only hope!'.

Thomas was then brought into the waiting area and the vibe on Thomas was completely different than that of Rick.

He was worried as if he had being called to sing on a grand stage.

The look of his strange red coloured eyes were that of desperation.

He was never meant to be here and he wished it would have remained that way.

Thomas on his own was not truly sure what had happened in Rick's home.

One second he is sleeping and the next he sees flashes of blue and red ring around the neighbourhood.

Still, for the police it had been an unsuccessful investigation.

No leads of any sort. The culprits fled the scene of the crime minutes before the police arrived.

No witnesses as it happened during the night. The only culprit had to be sent to the hospital.

They had being investigating from dusk till dawn.

All of the effort and they only had two leads. The blood dry kitchen knife used by Velmont to stab Mrs. Rick and the two names mentioned by Rick during the questioning.

"Velmont and Greg".

Though they had no intel on where Velmont and Greg were currently.

Those were two things that Wosh was happy to write down in his notebook.

There was still no word by Zach on the fingerprint intel.

It had been tested and they did find fingerprints, but the device refused to find a match.

Mrs. Rick was still in distress after the incident and Rick was in no situation for company.

Velmont seemed to have committed the perfect neighbourhood crime.

Wosh was washed up about the whole situation that was boiling up in the neighbourhood.

There was no more stillness and parity that broke through the airs.

Now it was just caution and worry. The incident about Mrs. Rick spread through the neighbourhood like a wild fire in the harmattan.

At this point, it was known as 'hot news'.

"Where were you at the scene of the crime", Wosh then asked Thomas.

"Well, I was sleeping, then I woke up to see police cars centered around my neighbours house.

So I got up, left my house and went to see what was happening---", once again, Thomas got stopped from talking but not by the gesture of Wosh but the flurry of frustration.

He grabbed his notebook looking as though he was ready to write but then slammed it on the table.

He broke his pen and chewed the edges as well as he kicked the desks as though he wanted it to break.

Wosh was left at a stale mate.

He left to open a curtain as soon figured out it was clear as day out the window although it was gloomy when they came in.

'Well the next best thing is to visit Zach and hope he found a match.

Then possibly, we can go manhunting for this Velmont and Greg', Wosh thought to himself.

He believed that these two men left the scene to quick for comfort and they became his major suspects.

This was the first major event that Wosh had faced in years.

His nerves began to kick in as the thought of getting this wrong was a cloud not to consider.
