MACHARA PRIMARY SCHOOL
Chapter 8
Sports Day at Machara Primary was a full-blown comedy show disguised as athletics. Selection was simple: run through the shopping center, pass by the neighbor's school, and whoever came back alive joined the team. No stopwatch, no training — just survival. Some students sprinted, others stopped to chew sugarcane or "drink water" at the restaurant, but as long as you weren't panting like a tractor, you qualified.
The prize for selection was sweeter than victory — each athlete got a whole sugarcane and a tiny pinch of glucose poured into the palm like holy communion. We licked it proudly, believing we had the strength of Kipchoge and the confidence of Bolt.
On the real Sports Day, visiting schools arrived looking sharp in uniforms and clean shoes, but we Machara athletes stood dusty, slippered, and fearless. With sugarcane fibers still stuck between our teeth, we charged at every race like hungry warriors.
No medals, no trophies — just bragging rights and sticky fingers. That was Machara's Olympic spirit, powered purely by sugarcane and glucose.
