Chapter 9
Education Day at Machara Primary was the village's version of a national festival — full of dust, drama, and dreams that were clearly on leave. With no hall in sight, desks were dragged outside and lined up like soldiers awaiting inspection. Teachers always warned, "We only fear rain," because one drop and the whole crowd scattered like hens escaping a hawk.
Awards were the real comedy. You could be celebrated with 23 marks in Mathematics and still walk home with a certificate. Parents clapped proudly, convinced their "Einstein" was on the road to university. Even KCPE failures got recognized — after all, being position 2 out of 3 was still "top 3."
Entertainment came courtesy of Stevo Hard Boy, our folk music hero who sang passionately about cows and milk. Parents nodded like it was poetry; students clapped offbeat just happy to skip class.
By the end, teachers promised parents their children would join universities. Parents believed, students smiled, and everyone went home hopeful — except the goats, who knew some of those "future doctors" would soon be herding them again.
