Chapter 1 - The beginning

The air felt different up north, cleaner, sharper. The sky stretched wider and brighter than anything Alyssa remembered from the south, and the wildflowers lining the road burned with colors so vivid they almost hurt to look at.

As their car crossed the boundary into Red Crescent Pack, Alyssa's wolf stirred restlessly beneath her skin.

Hope.

She hadn't felt it this strongly in a long time.

Alyssa hadn't liked the idea of moving at first. She never did. Moving had been the rhythm of her life for as long as she could remember, her, her sister, their mother, and their little brother drifting from pack to pack after their father's death. Staying never felt permanent. Belonging never lasted.

But this time felt… different.

Her mother would be working at the pack house as the head chef, a position rarely given to outsiders. Alyssa and her sister had secured scholarships into Red Crescent University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the wolf community.

Red Crescent Pack itself was legendary.

Known for its brute strength and strategic brilliance, it was ruled by the youngest Alpha in history, only twenty-two, with an intimidating list of degrees and achievements whispered about across territories.

And then there was his Beta.

A stone-faced brute, according to the rumors. Silent. Ruthless. Brilliant in battle and terrifyingly clever when it came to pack security. No one spoke his name lightly.

Alyssa leaned back in her seat, watching the towering pack lands unfold ahead of them. Training grounds. Pack houses. Wolves moving with purpose.

For the first time in a long while, she felt something unfamiliar bloom in her chest.

Anticipation.

She didn't know yet that this pack would change everything.

The moment her mother pulled into the pack house driveway, Alyssa felt it.

The air shifted—thickened—with a quiet, suffocating pressure that made her wolf bristle beneath her skin. The fine hairs along her arms stood on end, her instincts screaming in warning and awe all at once.

The pack house smelled of hazelnut and warmth, inviting on the surface, yet the raw power radiating from the massive structure was enough to force a weaker wolf to submit on the spot.

Alyssa glanced at the back seat.

Her siblings looked untouched. Unbothered.

Only she felt it.

Her mother stepped out first, smoothing her clothes as she headed toward the front doors to meet the Alpha and receive their pack licenses and house keys.

Alyssa followed, unease curling tightly in her stomach.

The inside of the pack house was even larger than she'd expected. The hallway stretched endlessly, its walls lined with portraits of past Alphas—each one radiating dominance, legacy, and power.

The air smelled faintly of roses.

But beneath it…

Something else.

A scent that punched straight into her senses, sharp and intoxicating. Her wolf surged forward, restless, demanding.

Her steps slowed without her meaning to. The pull was irresistible.

She followed it down the corridor, stopping outside an office where her mother stood, hand already on the door.

As the door opened, Alyssa's heart stuttered violently.

Her breath caught.

Time froze.

Her wolf screamed a single word in her mind
