Chapter 6 Xiao Wu

"Your Spirit is… an egg? Don't tell me you're a food system Spirit Master?" Wang Sheng stared at Lin Mo and the egg cradled in his arms, his expression conflicted. After a moment he spoke slowly.

"No."

Lin Mo shook his head, rolled his eyes at Wang Sheng, and said, "This egg isn't for eating. According to the Spirit Hall examiner who conducted my Awakening, it's probably a Waste Martial Soul—he couldn't figure out what it does, and I certainly don't have any real combat power."

"Oh."

Wang Sheng sighed in mild disappointment, then asked, "So you've got no objection to Tang San taking over as boss of Dorm Seven?"

"None." Lin Mo shook his head again.

At the end of the day, the reason Dorm Seven needed a leader—someone to act as the head sheep—was mainly to fend off the bullying Work-Study Students suffered from other students around the academy.

Right now, though, with Tang San already here and the soon-to-arrive Xiao Wu, the Work-Study side had two heavy hitters; there was simply no need for him to step in.

Especially with Xiao Wu the "rogue rabbit" around—once she showed her strength, the question would be whether she refrained from bullying others.

Besides, with Charmander still unhatched and him unwilling to expose his second Spirit, keeping a low profile was the smart move.

Meanwhile, Tang San was clearly uncomfortable with the title "boss."

After a moment's thought he said slowly, "Let's not call me that from now on. Just call me dorm head."

"All right, Dorm Head."

…While the others chatted and flattered Tang San, Lin Mo had already spread out the bedding he'd brought and tidied it neatly.

Then he pulled some fruit the villagers had packed for him from his backpack and set it on the dorm's shared table.

"These are from my village—home-grown, really sweet. Help yourselves! We're all roommates from now on," Lin Mo said, smiling at everyone.

These were the students he'd be living with for a long time; getting on their good side early would make life more pleasant.

The Work-Study Students looked at one another, and finally Wang Sheng stepped forward, bit into an apple, and declared:

"I like you, kid. I've got your back at the academy—nobody'll dare pick on you."

He thumped his chest proudly. "My Spirit is Battle-Tiger, my spirit power's already rank 9. I'll definitely become a powerful Spirit Master!"

"Then I'll count on you to protect me," Lin Mo replied with a grin.

Once Wang Sheng started, the others followed suit.

Work-Study Students were the orphans of the academy—unwanted, uncared for. The state of the dorm made that clear.

Food was the same: in the canteen they could afford only the cheapest set meals.

Even ordinary fruit was a rare treat.

Only Tang San stood to one side, awkward and unsure what to do.

The situation was beyond his experience; even with memories of two lives, this was a first for him.

Seeing that, Lin Mo quickly grabbed two fruits and pressed them into Tang San's hands. "They taste great—try them."

He had no wish to earn the label "already treading the path of death" over a couple of apples.

Tang San stared at the fruit, emotions flickering across his face, and finally murmured, "Thank you."

Just as everyone was happily eating, a pigtailed little girl appeared in the doorway of Dorm Seven.

The sight froze them; several nearly dropped their fruit.

The scene inside clearly surprised Xiao Wu too. After a moment she strode in. "Is this Dorm Seven?"

"Yes."

Dorm Head Tang San swallowed the last bite of fruit and stood. "I'm the dorm head. You're the new Work-Study Student?"

There was puzzlement in his voice.

"That's right." Xiao Wu nodded brightly.

Wang Sheng caught Tang San's confusion and explained, "Elementarydorms are mixed; boys and girls share."

"Strange—no Work-Study Students last year, and now three in one go."

"Boss, go show her who's boss."

Wang Sheng egged Tang San on, sorry he'd missed seeing Lin Mo fight him.

He wasn't going to miss this.

"That… won't be necessary," Tang San said, embarrassed. He didn't mind being dorm head, but he couldn't bring himself to bully a girl.

Xiao Wu blinked, looked up at the dorm sign to confirm she was in the right place, then smiled sweetly.

"Hi, I'm Xiao Wu—'dance' Wu."

Pressed by Wang Sheng and the others, Tang San reluctantly stepped forward.

"Hello, I'm Tang San, Spirit Blue Silver Grass, rank 10 Spirit Scholar, dorm head. Rule here: newcomers show their Spirit's strength. The strongest becomes dorm head."

"You sure?" Xiao Wu gave him an odd look.

"Positive." Tang San nodded.

"All right, let's do it."

Eyes sparkling, she set her uniform aside, Battle Intent flaring.

"Xiao Wu, Spirit Rabbit, rank 10 Spirit Scholar—"

Before the words finished, her leg shot out, foot aimed at Tang San's head.

Tang San reacted in a heartbeat, Purple Demon Eye sharpening his sight; he sidestepped and caught her ankle.

He stamped his right foot and drove a textbook shoulder-thrust at her.

But to his shock she slipped free, her missed kick sweeping across to rest on his shoulder.

Hands braced on his shoulders, she swung her other leg up and locked both around his neck.

Using his forward momentum, she arched backward, hands on the floor, supple legs spring-like, twisting to flip him.

The intimate contact froze Tang San for half a beat—outside his experience.

Before he could break free, she hurled him over her body and sent him flying.
