I kick the sheets away from my body and bolt upright in bed. The time I've spent lying here has been torture, trying to fall back asleep while Katherine's warning plays on repeat in my mind like a broken record.
She was right about everything.
Necromancers possess the ability to manipulate the dead. James died and returned to life.
His resurrection came through dark magic, which means controlling him wouldn't be as simple as commanding a mindless zombie, but if Beck managed to gather enough power to curse him initially, then maybe she could do worse.
"That's never happening," I declare to my familiars, who remain sprawled across the mattress beside me. "He would end his own life before harming me." The truth of those words settles deep in my bones, and suddenly terror grips me even tighter.
