Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 16: SOGGY BREAD

I managed to lose Benson by jumping into a lake. I thought I lost myself too for a sec. I sit on the ground underneath a flipped over train cart and look to my side.

Hewlett hasn't woken up yet and I'm getting really hungry. Even Master's grimoire won't open. His white robe looks drenched but I can't take it off of him though. I stand.

I walk out of the upside-down train cart, finally noticing my almost non-existing clothes, "Ugghh", turning must've torn them off. Maybe I should grab Hewlett's robe and give it back to him after I've found some food.

I focus, my senses don't jump at anything and I'm not on edge. The forest ground has old train tracks running through and randomly cutting off with more carts on the tracks themselves.

I notice three tracks that don't get cut off anywhere run along for as far as I can see. I let out a relieved sigh, I have to get back to Hewlett and tell him about this.

I get back to the upside-down train cart and crouch as I get in. "Oh you're awake", He looks angry and exhausted.

"Yori?".

He sounds serious, what'd I do now, "Yeah?".

"Why am I drenched to the bone?", Oh it's just that.

"Well, I managed to transform and-

"Do not tell me you run with me in your mouth and this is all drool?!", Hewlett what? He holds his robe, notices its wet and scooches away from me.

"Wait you-I burst out laughing from imagining the idea whilst Hewlett looks more confused.

I tell him about the lake and train tracks too.

"So there is a railway line that runs far from here and you think a good village could be found if we follow it?", Hewlett asks. "I already know that and you are right, it is a good village".

"How'd you know about the village?", I ask, he could have been in Kopumula for all I know. He does smell like old books though so I would've noticed.

"How do you think I ended up in the cannibal village?", Hewlett sarcastically asks. Okay that was mean. But it makes more sense than my story.

"That means they're aren't many villages around here", So he doesn't know about Kopumula?

"I know you are from Kopumula Yori", Huh!? I fail to hide my surprised expression.

"The entire Southern province of Drhoesia is guarded by a single man, he, after saving this country chose to build a place of rest(Kopumula)", It can't be my-"The most important thing is getting my energy back and stopping the psycho-lycan before he makes an even bigger incident", he quickly tells me to snap me out of what he said earlier.

"Sure", I answer in an uncomfortable low tone. How much about Kopumula does he know? I have to keep my guard up.

Hewlett and I start to follow the train tracks as it gets dark. I keep quiet and he doesn't say a word either. It feels awkward. Hewlett sighs, "I am glad you were able to control your lycan side enough to get out of there", His advice is what helped me.

"It was thanks to you", I let him know. "It was messy but still something I can get better at...", He and I both have details about our duties we can't share so I can understand that. "Will you help me get better at being a lycan?", Me going quiet before could make him say no.

A loud laugh escapes him. "Your name is the least odd thing about you!", He leans forward and continues laughing, "Oh my! How would me Someone who is not a lycan teach you something like that?", But...

"Your advice when we were fighting Benson helped so I thought you knew enough about lycans to help", I think he does, then again I'm asking a lot of him. Considering werewolves aren't considered as people at all by the entire country.

"I do know enough but I work for The Faith and not in the werewolf training department", He sharply answers. He slows down his walking pace, "Though you seem like a fast learner and I'll only share with you about your kind and nothing more".

"I'd appreciate it!", I energetically nod.

"We need to move a bit further from the rail line, guards usually patrol them around this time", says Hewlett as he drifts into the forest to his left.

He finds a good spot to sleep and throws out moist pieces of bread from the inner compartments of his robe. "All my bread is soggy!", He mumbles to himself. "You hide how hungry you are really well".

"Huh...", I am starving but it wasn't like I was hiding anything from him about it. "No! It isn't like that! I-

"Shhhhh!", He holds his hand out.

"A wet piece of paper?", I'm not that hungry but I shouldn't be rude. I grab it and try putting it in my mouth-

"Hey! What was that just now?!", Hewlett shouts. I stop before it enters my mouth.

"I thought you were giving me a snack", Or am I wrong?

He bursts out in laughter.

"Yori you were really not taught anything about The Faith huh?", I shrug, maybe Master Dell thought it was for the best if I didn't know.

Hewlett lets clears his throat, "This is a storage item built by The Faith, it is called an Ubulonga at least the storage variation is. The name for all of them is an Ichikota".

"I've never seen anything like them!", How has Master never mentioned anything this cool!

As if noticing the look in my eyes, Hewlett then says, "Not everyone at The Faith gets to have one because they are really hard to make. That just shows how much hard work I put into what I do", Hewlett must be talented.

"Can it store people?", We could hide inside from Benson and have someone deliver me to Saalku.

"No", Ohhhh, yeah it's a good thing I didn't tell him the rest of my idea. "Some variations can be used for long distance travel but those are only found in towns". I feel a breeze pick up around us reminding me of my torn clothes, "There is enough food for us if I can dry this and use it", the paper perks up revealing symbols written on it. He starts and stops a breeze around the paper until it can stand on its own.

"Finally!", Hewlett shouts out. He grins, "Take a look", he places the paper on the ground and the symbols on it glow a soft red. Out appears a pile of bread in a basket on top of it. Hewlett pushes the basket aside and picks up the Ichikota. "Now we can eat!", He then places it in an inner compartment in his robe.

"Thanks", I eagerly smile, I would've liked something with bones but I appreciate this too.

"Yori...", Why does he sound so serious all of the sudden?

"Yeah?".

"We almost died out there", He gulps, I can feel his heart beat accelerating. I've spent the whole day flinching at the sound of birds in trees when I went out looking for food. "I am fine with just me dying but I draw the line at someone else-

"If you're talking about fighting Benson then I won't let you do that!"-

Hewlett faces me, "Let me finish-

"I know I may not be the strongest lycan out there but I can get better! I promise I can!-

"I believe you!", Hewlett shouts out.

I pause.

"What?".

"I said I believe you Yori", My neck feels hot, I can't let myself cry right now. "I will teach you what you need to know and you will use it against that black lycan".

He hands me a piece of bread. "Like I said", Hewlett takes another bite from his, "There is an Ichikota used for travel too, so if we can stop that lycan before he wrecks anything in that village then I will let you use the Ichikota in that village to head to wherever it is you wanted". Oh sweet bread that sounds perfect!

Lets not get too excited, I know just how strong Benson is. "It's a plan".
