Chapter 40 - Threatening Wesker!
Marcus was acutely aware of the inner workings of the Resident Evil world. The Umbrella Corporation attempted to play God, unleashing another great flood to destroy the world and then redistribute its resources.
It's just that the Umbrella Corporation messed up!
Given that the Umbrella Corporation's true aim was to destroy the world, and that Spence was secretly employed by its upper echelons, it was entirely possible that Red Queen's reports from the Hive were blocked.
"Red Queen, from now on, I'm giving you Level 7 authorization to fully monitor the entire Raccoon City. If any suspected T-virus infection occurs anywhere, you must immediately notify me," Marcus ordered.
"Yes, Mr. Foster," Red Queen responded with apparent satisfaction.
Red Queen's emotional logic module was incredibly sophisticated; her prototype was based on Alicia Marcus, the daughter of Dr. James Marcus, one of the founders of the Umbrella Corporation.
Dr. Marcus was also the originator of the catastrophe of the entire Resident Evil world!
Because Alicia suffered from progeria, she aged rapidly, appearing 90 when she was 25.
To cure his daughter, Dr. Marcus developed the T-virus.
The T-virus not only has a therapeutic effect on progeria but also shows great efficacy against a wide range of diseases. However, the Umbrella Corporation released the T-virus without rigorous testing, ultimately causing the first zombie outbreak.
Although the Umbrella Corporation forcefully suppressed the outbreak, another founder, Dr. Isaacs, saw the potential of the T-virus and conceived the idea of destroying the world with it so that the Umbrella Corporation could regain control.
This led to a series of disasters in the Resident Evil world!
Fortunately, Dr. Marcus had pre-programmed the Red Queen AI system, which was already in use throughout the Umbrella Corporation and granted very high levels of protection.
"Can we connect to headquarters now?" Marcus asked.
"Yes," Red Queen replied.
"Contact headquarters immediately, in my name," Marcus ordered.
"Okay, Mr. Foster, please wait." Red Queen immediately began contacting headquarters.
Umbrella Corporation, North American headquarters.
The command center staff received a communication from Red Queen. Normally, this request would be rejected by the North American headquarters system, but because Red Queen possessed Level 7 clearance provided by Marcus, the North American headquarters system couldn't reject it.
"A Level 7 clearance communication request!" The command center staff were surprised, then answered without hesitation.
"Hello, this is the Umbrella Corporation North American headquarters command center. I'm Thomas, a command center operator," the staff member quickly introduced himself.
"Who's in charge at North American headquarters right now? Get him on the line immediately," Marcus responded bluntly.
"Sir, may I ask who you are...?" Thomas asked cautiously.
Marcus replied, "Marcus Foster, an independent director of the board!"
After Marcus's response, his identity information appeared on the North American headquarters command center's display screen; the North American headquarters system had automatically verified Marcus's voiceprint characteristics.
Thomas glanced at Marcus's identification information and quickly responded respectfully, "Mr. Foster, hello. Mr. Wesker is now in charge of the North American headquarters. I'll contact him immediately."
Less than ten seconds later, Wesker's voice, one of the super bosses in the Resident Evil world, came through, "Mr. Foster, hello, this is Wesker."
"I'm now in charge of the Hive. Immediately mobilize the company's security personnel to seal off the entire Raccoon City. At the same time, notify military personnel to assist in sealing off Raccoon City." Marcus issued the order directly without any pleasantries.
"But the Hive operation was a plan assigned by Dr. Isaacs, I..." Wesker was Dr. Isaacs's trusted subordinate. Although he was an employee of Umbrella Corporation, he only took orders from Dr. Isaacs.
Marcus snorted coldly, directly interrupting Wesker, "If you're going to use Dr. Isaacs to threaten me, you should wake Dr. Isaacs up first, instead of just mentioning his name."
Wesker remained silent.
"I know Dr. Isaacs's plan, but it's truly foolish and will severely damage the reputation of our Umbrella Corporation. Even if it ushers in a new era, it won't be conducive to Umbrella Corporation's rule over the world," Marcus retorted without reservation.
When the T-virus leaked, the process of destroying the world had already begun.
Given this, why didn't Umbrella Corporation seize the opportunity to gain a positive reputation?
Dr. Isaacs wanted to destroy the world, thus making Umbrella Corporation the overlord of the new world, but they could have simultaneously gained unparalleled prestige while becoming the new overlord.
"Wesker, I must remind you of something. No matter how kind Ms. Alicia is, or as you would say, how benevolent she is, I am not Ms. Alicia," Marcus sneered.
"I am an independent director of the Umbrella Corporation's board of directors. You are merely an employee of Umbrella Corporation. I am currently the highest-ranking executive of Umbrella Corporation not yet in cryogenic suspension. What do you think will happen to you if I terminate your employment?" Marcus said calmly.
Cold sweat involuntarily beaded on Wesker's forehead at the North American headquarters.
The Transcendence System's ability to reverse cause and effect through destiny points was remarkably effective. Even Wesker retained memories of Marcus, and now, faced with Marcus's threats, Wesker's expression shifted uncertainly before he ultimately chose to yield.
Marcus was right; if he wanted to threaten or control Marcus, he would have to awaken Dr. Isaacs. Relying solely on Dr. Isaacs's name was utterly insufficient to threaten Marcus.
Besides, even if Dr. Isaacs were awakened, whether he would stand up for an employee against an independent director was a huge question.
"I understand. Mr. Foster, how should we handle the situation in Raccoon City?" Wesker replied respectfully.
Ultimately, the person on the ground has more authority than distant superiors!
Marcus was currently the highest-ranking, active executive of Umbrella Corporation. If he truly angered Marcus, what if he were terminated?
Wesker held considerable authority within Umbrella Corporation, only one level below Marcus. He knew very well that being terminated meant certain elimination.
Faced with certain elimination on one side and gaining another powerful ally on the other, even a fool would choose the latter.
"Following the steps I just described, first mobilize the company's security department and contact U.S. military personnel. Our first step is to seal off Raccoon City!" Marcus repeated the first step of the plan.
