Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 The Gastronomic Tribulation

Welcome all to yet another episode of season 1

...................

The school cafeteria was a scene of absolute, low-budget carnage.

Not from the monsters, Han Jin had ensured that they never made it past the hallway, but from the students.

Panic had a way of making teenagers very hungry once the adrenaline wore off.

Han Jin stood in the lunch line, looking at a tray of mystery meat and soggy broccoli with a look of profound betrayal.

"System," he whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Explain this. I was told Earth had culinary evolution. This looks like someone tried to refine a spirit stone out of industrial waste and failed."

[System Note: User is currently at 'Zhongshan High School'.

Cafeteria budget is $1.20 per student. Please adjust expectations.

Would you like to spend 5 System Points to 'Purify' the meal?]

"Purify it? I want to exorcise it," Han Jin muttered.

"Jin bro! Over here!"

Fatty Wei was waving him over to a corner table, his face practically glowing.

He had somehow managed to hoard three servings of fried rice.

Beside him sat Lin Xi.

The "Ice Beauty" looked less like a goddess and more like a woman who had just seen her entire world-view tossed into a wood chipper.

Han Jin sat down, his presence immediately causing the surrounding tables to go quiet. The kings God Aura was now a passive effect; even though he wasn't trying, he looked like a king who had accidentally wandered into a peasant's hovel.

"You're not human," Lin Xi said, skipping the pleasantries.

She didn't have her tray.

She was too busy staring at the way Han Jin held his plastic spork as if it were a scepter.

"Technically, I am," Han Jin replied, poking a piece of the mystery meat.

"Born in this city, eighteen years ago.

I just... took a very long sabbatical trip in a different dimension.

Ten thousand years is a long time to learn how to fix a buggy reality."

"Ten thousand..." Lin Xi leaned in, her voice a sharp whisper.

"The Great Harvest is meant to be the first time this sector interacts with the Higher Realms.

There shouldn't be anyone here who knows about the Andromeda Soul Seals or the Void Council.

You're a variable the System didn't account for."

Han Jin finally took a bite of the rice. He chewed slowly, his brow furrowing.

[Warning: Palate Shock! User's refined soul is rejecting 'Excessive Sodium' and 'Artificial Flavors'.]

"You know," Han Jin said, ignoring the System's warning. "In the Ninth Heaven, I once ate a phoenix heart braised in the morning dew of a sentient nebula.

It was... alright.

But this?" He gestured to the greasy rice. "This is an insult to the concept of thermodynamics. It's pure chaos."

He looked at Lin Xi.

"And as for your so called Great Harvest? It's a scam. Your Council isn't testing Earth.

They're seasoning it.

They want to see which humans develop the best flavors, skills, powers, souls...so they can pluck them when they're ripe."

Lin Xi went stiff. "I am just a Recorder. I don't...."

"You're a spy with a conscience," Han Jin interrupted. "Which is why you're leaking energy. You're stressed."

Suddenly, the cafeteria doors swung open. A group of men in black tactical gear marched in, led by a tall, athletic man with a scar running across his bridge of his nose. He wasn't a student, and he definitely wasn't a teacher.

A blue screen hovered over the leader's head, visible only to Han Jin and, presumably, Lin Xi.

[Entity: Captain Zhao - 'The Awakened']

[Level: 12]

[Class: Earth Vanguard]

[Evaluation: A slightly more competent ant.]

"Attention!" Captain Zhao shouted, his voice amplified by a System skill.

"The school is now under the jurisdiction of the Global Awakening Bureau.

We are looking for the student who neutralized a D-Rank Abomination with... a piece of stationery."

The entire cafeteria, as one unit, turned and pointed at Han Jin.

Fatty Wei looked at Han Jin, then at the commandos, then back at the rice. "Uh, Jin bro? I think the government wants their paperclip back."

Han Jin sighed, leaning back in his chair.

He picked up a napkin and wiped his mouth with the grace of a man who was about to execute a traitor.

"System," Han Jin said. "If I accidentally slap a government official, does that count as a Face-Slapping quest?"

[BING! New Quest: The Bureau's Blunder]

[Objective: Show the 'Vanguard' the difference between an 'Awakened' and a 'God'.]

[Reward: 500 System Points, 1 'Intermediate' Recipe Book.]

"A recipe book?" Han Jin's eyes lit up. "Now we're talking. I'm tired of eating like a refugee."

He stood up, the chair sliding back with a resonant thud that silenced the room.

He looked at Captain Zhao, who was approaching with a pair of high-tech handcuffs.

"Captain," Han Jin said, his voice smooth and cold. "I'll give you exactly three seconds to turn around and find someone else to bother.

I'm currently having a very disappointing lunch, and my patience is as thin as this steak."

Captain Zhao sneered, reaching for Han Jin's shoulder. "Listen, kid. You're coming with....."

Han Jin didn't even move his arms.

He simply used the Rusty Paperclip in his pocket to link the Captain's forward momentum to the floor behind him.

WHAM

The Captain didn't just fall; he did a full 360-degree flip in the air and landed face-first on the linoleum, his tactical gear clattering loudly.

"One," Han Jin counted.
