The car engine died, and a heavy silence filled the cabin. They were home.
Ruby was the first to move. She pulled away from Max's embrace and scrambled out of the door before he could say a word. Max jumped out after her, his boots hitting the gravel, but Ruby was already halfway to the porch. She tried to run, but her long ball dress tangled around her legs and her high heels sank into the dirt, slowing her down.
Samuel was standing right outside the front door, waiting as if he'd known exactly when they would arrive. Ruby didn't even look at him. She brushed past him in silence, her fingers still gripping the tiny baby booties the mysterious woman had thrown at her.
"Ruby!" Max called out.
