Ruby's heart did a violent somersault. Relief washed over her like a cool wave. The man inside the room with the woman wasn't Max.
But that relief was short-lived, immediately replaced by the searing heat of the man currently standing behind her, his hard length pressing firmly into her backside.
Before she could make a sound, Max's hands tightened on her waist. He lifted her nearly off her feet, whisking her away from the doorway and into the shadows of the hall.
"That must be Samuel," Max murmured, his breath ghosting over her skin. "I suppose I was too hard on him earlier. That's how he relieves his stress."
"Oh," Ruby breathed, her pulse thumping in her throat. "I see." She bit her lip again, her mind spinning.
Suddenly, a voice drifted from the study, sharp and alert. "Who's there?" Samuel called out.
