Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Picking Up the Pieces

The hallways were still buzzing—but differently now.

Hana noticed the difference the moment she stepped in. Whispering eyes followed, but this time, there was less mockery and more caution. People seemed to weigh their words before speaking.

It didn't make it easier. Hana still felt the sting of the video. The imagined judgments. The way the world seemed too big, too loud, and too sharp.

She found Min-jae waiting for her near the old auditorium stairs, where they'd first been caught. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes were sharper than ever, like he had seen through the chaos and knew exactly what had to happen next.

"You're okay?" he asked, voice low.

Hana hesitated. "I… I think so."

He nodded. "Good. Because things aren't over yet."

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

"The school is taking action against her," he said, "but it'll take time. Meanwhile… people will talk. Rumors won't disappear overnight."

Hana exhaled slowly. "I don't care about rumors. I just… I don't want anyone else to get hurt."

Min-jae's eyes softened. "And that's why I like you. You think about others even when it's hard on you."

They walked together, side by side, down the quiet path behind the auditorium. The air was warmer than usual, carrying the faint scent of late-blooming flowers. Hana felt something shift inside her—a mixture of relief, courage, and the quiet pulse of hope.

"Min-jae…" she started, hesitating. "Thank you. For… standing up for me."

He looked at her, a small smile tugging at his lips. "I wouldn't leave you to face this alone. Not now. Not ever."

Her cheeks warmed. She wanted to say more, to tell him how much she cared, how much she trusted him, but the words stuck in her throat. Instead, she squeezed his hand lightly, letting her feelings speak for her.

He squeezed back. "Come on," he said. "Let's get some fresh air. Forget the world for a while."

Hana nodded, relief mingling with the fluttering warmth in her chest. For the first time since the video, she felt… safe.

They walked quietly toward the park nearby, letting the world around them fade into soft green shadows. The wind rustled the trees gently, carrying laughter from children playing at a distance. Hana let herself breathe fully for the first time in days.

Min-jae stopped near a small fountain, turning to face her. "Hana…"

"Yes?" she whispered.

"I know things are messy. And I know people will keep talking. But… I like you. And I don't want to hide it anymore."

Hana's heart skipped a beat. She smiled softly, eyes shining. "I like you too."

For a long moment, they just looked at each other, letting the weight of the past few days dissolve in that quiet space.

Then Min-jae reached out, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. Hana felt the warmth of his hand linger as he leaned closer.

And just as their lips were about to meet, a sharp noise interrupted them—a distant shout from the park entrance, followed by hurried footsteps.

Both froze. Hana's heart thudded painfully in her chest.

Someone was coming.

And whatever it was, it wasn't meant to be good.
