Finding the Trainer who abandoned Charmander wasn't difficult.

Sam clearly remembered that the man lived nearby and often gathered with his companions at the Pokémon Center. As long as they waited there, he was bound to show up sooner or later.

The Pokémon Center wasn't far away. After walking just a short distance, Sam brought Charmander to their destination.

This Pokémon Center was located in a relatively remote area. Its decoration was simple, and most of the structure was built from wood.

Still, though it was small, it was fully equipped. Everything a Pokémon Center should have was there—including Nurse Joy.

The moment Charmander entered the Pokémon Center, it became visibly more excited.

It was clearly familiar with this place. Its former Trainer had brought it here many times before.

"Alright, alright, calm down," Sam said gently. "Your Trainer doesn't seem to be here yet. Let's wait."

Looking at Charmander's bright, hopeful expression, Sam didn't know what to say. He could only hope that Charmander would be able to withstand the truth once it finally faced it.

Sam led Charmander to a quieter corner and sat down. After ordering a drink, he waited silently for the arrival of the person who had abandoned Charmander.

Luck was on Sam's side.

He had expected to wait a long time, but that very evening, the person he was looking for appeared.

A young man with dyed blue hair and black sunglasses entered the Pokémon Center, surrounded by a group of rough-looking youths.

Charmander froze for a moment—then suddenly grew excited.

It jumped up from its seat, trying to rush toward the boy.

"Wait, Charmander." Sam reached out and stopped it.

He looked at Charmander seriously.

"Charmander, don't you want to know why he never came back to get you? If you want the answer, stay here and listen for a bit."

Why… didn't he come back?

That question struck straight at the doubt Charmander had been avoiding.

All of its excitement faded. Charmander slowly sat back down, head lowered, its small flame flickering weakly.

No one knew what it was thinking.

"It's really that simple."

The blue-haired boy dumped several Poké Balls onto the table and spoke proudly.

Judging from the number of Pokémon he owned—and the fact that he once had a Charmander—it was obvious that his family background was quite good.

That wealth was also the reason so many people clustered around him.

"So awesome, Brother Damian!"

"Brother Damian really is amazing!"

"But… Brother Damian," one of them asked, "don't you have a Charmander anymore?"

Charmander.

Now the real drama began.

Sam and Charmander both listened carefully.

Damian curled his lips in disdain.

"Of course I did. But that Charmander was useless. It couldn't even beat a Poliwag. Absolutely pathetic."

"What happened to it?" his followers asked curiously.

Damian spread his hands and laughed.

"I threw it into the mountains. That idiot kept getting lost and crawling back. In the end, I told it to wait there and said I'd come back for it."

He laughed loudly.

"And it actually believed me."

"Hahahaha! What a stupid Pokémon!"

Charmander heard every word.

In truth, it had already guessed the answer—but hearing it spoken out loud still crushed it.

Its head dropped even lower, and the flame on its tail dimmed.

Sam couldn't take it anymore.

"What are you doing, Charmander?" he said firmly.

"Being abandoned isn't the end of the world. Everyone loses something at some point."

He placed a hand on Charmander's head.

"Cheer up. You just need to prove one thing."

"That abandoning you was the worst decision he ever made."

Those words snapped Charmander out of its daze.

It lifted its head and looked into Sam's eyes—eyes filled with genuine concern.

Charmander made its decision.

"Ouch."

Sam blinked.

"You want me to capture you… help you become stronger… and then go back and beat Damian?"

"Ouch!!"

That's right.

Sam smiled faintly.

He hadn't been wrong—this Charmander had an unbreakable pride.

Being abandoned hadn't crushed it.

It had ignited its fighting spirit.

Ding!
