Chapter 40 - Preparation

I had mentioned before that I wanted to figure out what the record was for the annual class quest and apparently that didn't exist. I had hoped to set a new record but according to everyone I asked including Mr G the answer was always the same. It was incalculable as the quest was different every year and the areas were vastly different.

For instance last year the second year quested in the goblin kingdom's outskirts which was where they had bronze ranked goblin villages that needed to be cleared out before their population grew too large. The previous year the second years went to a cavern that was infested with bronze ranked spiders and bats that were terrorizing the locals.

Some years they would be sent to clear out iron rank infestations of various kinds. The discovery of different locations needing clearing was always changing as there was so much land to cover and not enough beast masters to cover it all.

This year we were told that we would be going to the frozen wasteland to the south. There was a series of frost giants, frost golems, and frost yetis that varied between iron and bronze rank. The reports were that they had formed raiding parties and were attacking our southern towns.

The rules for this year's quest in terms of scoring were the following. Iron ranked beasts confirmed killed through their beast core collected after killing them would result in one point. Bronze ranked beasts confirmed through the same means would be worth ten points. I asked if the silver rank was a hundred and I was scowled at for even thinking we could kill a silver rank.

Teams of six were formed if they weren't already on a team. Ours already together made it simple and we went to collect the items we needed for the quest which included a void storage unit with emergency gear and rations. I thought it was wild to put a void dimensional storage unit inside of a void dimensional storage unit but then again it made sense to have.

Each of us was handed these backpacks that were easily strapped to our bodies from our shoulder to our hip. Inside of the pacts was one of those crystals Mr G had handed us that allowed one to teleport instantly upon smashing it. There was a small mana replenishment bottle as well as an emergency supply universal blood which I found to be odd.

Then classes were focused on all of the different aspects of going on a quest that related to the subject. While we would have plenty of adults on the trip there were still plenty of opportunities to get yourself killed. We focused on learning the weak points of those three types of enemies.

We also learned how to create a fire if stranded. There was even a class on how to cook over a small fire. The known vegetation was covered as multiple berries and fruits that grew in the region had similar poisonous versions that we all had to be aware of.

The last thing we were told was that the winning team would get a reward from the armory. Everyone got really excited to hear that news and the comments about Arcanum being too powerful to participate started.

If I were to really truly think about it I would probably too be upset that there was a team of four silver ranked beast masters on one team when most were still trying to get out of the iron rank. But at the same time the competitive nature I had in me told me that idea was garbage, the strongest will always prevail in the end no matter what.

The last night before we departed for our class quest the six of us were sitting in our room as the girls had come to it so we could discuss the upcoming event. The group consensus was that Joey was going to be on beast core duty as we would take them out and continue forward.

Maddy volunteered to help and at first we hesitated then I remembered that Wispy would duplicate itself so its split personality spell would be used on Maddy and the two would be on core duty to speed up the process.

We had been talking for close to half an hour when the box in the middle of our room that had been dormant suddenly radiated energy again. We were all confused as to what was happening as both Adam and myself couldn't feel power but we could see the same effect as before on the box.

'Tell Abby and Maddy to touch the box. It is wanting to part with energy to them. It has already given us, it wants to give them its power. The box appears to be sentient.' Wispy informed me. I relayed that information to the girls who both were beyond intrigued.

The two were cautious but curious and decided to touch it together. The moment their hands touched the box each of their bodies started to glow similar to mine. Missy appeared as she felt she was going to explode as she bursted out of Maddy's chest. The faery was once green and blue now had purple arcane energy flowing through its wings and eyes.

Lacy did the same thing, unable to stay inside of Abby, the lightning wolf appeared with a massive howl. Its body grew larger and its eyes took on the arcane purple and the lightning streaks along her body were now mixed with arcane stripes.

Both girls collapsed and Adam was fortunately in the right place as was I but I caught Abby and he caught Maddy. Not that it mattered but Travis thought it was comical to see us save each other's girl as he called it. We laid them down on our beds so that they would be ok as we weren't sure how long they would be out for.

That is when I realized that if they test silver we would be right back in the sixes tournament as a team. What I didn't know was that the academies were trying everything they could to keep us out of the tournament.
