Having made his decision, Varys took the parchment in his hand, entered the room, lit a brazier, and threw the parchment that had just delivered the message inside.
Watching from the tree as Varys's expression shifted before slowly calming down, Drogon couldn't help but admire his composure. He couldn't guess the man's thoughts, but that didn't hinder the next step of his plan.
He flew to an unnoticed rooftop, spread out a parchment, and continued writing: "King's Landing will face a great upheaval. Queen Daenerys will unify Slavers Bay. Others have appeared beyond The Wall."
"After Queen Daenerys unifies Slavers Bay, she will lack capable people by her side, lack local intelligence from Slavers Bay, and lack talents like Tyrion."
"Since you are inclined to serve, make your decision early. You don't need to go to Slavers Bay in person; you are still of great use in King's Landing. You only need to increase the number of your Little Birds in Slavers Bay and tell the Queen the information she wants to know when she needs it."
"If you agree, place a clay jar on The Wall, one similar to the jar that fed your big treasure just now." Signed—The Mysterious Man.
There were quite a few words. After laboriously finishing and putting away the pen and paper, Drogon flew back to Varys's residence, quickly placed the parchment on the stone table, and swiftly flew back to the large tree outside The Wall.
The stone table faced the door directly and was not aligned with any windows. Unless Drogon was unlucky and Varys opened the door the moment he landed on the table, he wouldn't be seen.
To Drogon's surprise, just as he flew into the tree, the door was opened by Varys. He cried out in his heart that it was a close call.
Little did he know that it was because he flew too fast, causing a sound that Varys heard. Normally, Varys wouldn't have noticed such a small noise, but after the shock he just received, he was more alert than usual.
Opening the door, he looked at the stone table—another parchment! Varys felt as if he had seen a ghost.
He had come out to check upon hearing the noise, but he didn't expect to find anything; instead, he felt he was being paranoid. Yet, he never expected to see a parchment in the same spot again.
If he weren't absolutely certain that the previous parchment was already in the brazier, he would have doubted whether he had forgotten to take it.
Hurrying to the stone table, his eyes widened as he read the contents. This... he had actually deduced incorrectly. It wasn't Littlefinger leaving him messages, but someone from Daenerys's side. But how was that possible?
Furthermore, the other party knew his secret residence, knew about the Sorcerer, and had been tracking him just now without him noticing at all.
Varys felt a chill run through his body, as if he had fallen into an ice cellar. He truly couldn't believe that anyone besides Littlefinger could see through his intentions, even anticipating his future thoughts.
When did such a powerful figure appear by Daenerys's side? He knew nothing about it. Only now, when someone had come to his doorstep, did he realize it, and he had even mistaken them for Littlefinger.
He didn't suspect this was Littlefinger playing tricks. The paper made it very clear; the goal was to have him pledge loyalty to Daenerys in advance and take Tyrion with him. These were all his future intentions. Littlefinger would never play this hand; it would be meaningless.
What was the "great upheaval" mentioned? Had Daenerys already grown strong enough to influence the situation in King's Landing?
Conquering the three locations of Slavers Bay with eight thousand Unsullied wasn't too difficult, but managing them wouldn't be easy. Relying solely on Daenerys and her current subordinates would indeed be hard.
Although Varys's Little Birds in Slavers Bay weren't as numerous as those in Pentos, he understood the situation there very well. It would be incredibly difficult to break the slavery system that had persisted for so long.
Beyond The Wall was Varys's blind spot. The Others had disappeared for a thousand years; could they really be making a comeback?
Looking at the three pieces of information in the message, Varys was shocked. If everything said was true, where did the owner of the letter get this information?
Other places aside, King's Landing was his own home base. Even he, the Master of Whisperers, didn't know what great upheaval would occur. How did The Mysterious Man know? Or was it his own doing?
Varys's greatest confidence came from his Little Birds, but before The Mysterious Man, he had lost his greatest reliance. He hadn't even known he was being followed to his secret residence; he estimated that the disguise he took pride in was also transparent before this person.
He had originally thought that with his special talents, he would surely be entrusted with heavy responsibilities and become Daenerys's right-hand man upon joining her.
But now, his confidence had been completely shattered. A slight consolation was that the other party still had a use for him. After a brief moment of daze, Varys slowly recovered.
Looking at the parchment in his hand, he finally wondered how The Mysterious Man had silently placed it on the stone table.
He walked up to the courtyard wall and examined it closely. The Wall was over two meters high; an ordinary person would have to exert some effort to climb in. Most importantly, he found no traces of climbing. Had they flown in?
A somewhat absurd thought surfaced in Varys's mind.
A person certainly couldn't fly in, and it would be hard for a bird to precisely place a parchment on the table, almost in the exact same spot as the previous one. Could it be the work of a Shapeshifter?
Ever since he heard a strange voice from the brazier where his manhood was sacrificed as a child, Varys had gained a deep understanding of those eerie powers.
He knew that Shapeshifters could enter the consciousness of birds or beasts, seeing what they saw and hearing what they heard. Powerful Shapeshifters could even control animals for their own use.
If that were the case, the person who left the message might not have left yet. He looked around carefully again, his gaze settling on several large trees in the distance of the courtyard; only there could birds be hidden.
Drogon hid behind the tree trunk before Varys's gaze turned over, unafraid of being discovered.
After observing the large trees and finding nothing unusual, Varys didn't give up. He picked up pebbles from the courtyard and threw them at the trees, startling several small birds perched there into flight.
Drogon: "..."
Watching the birds fly away, Varys could only shrug helplessly. Those few small birds didn't seem to represent anything.
Before opening the door just now, he had only heard a faint, indistinct sound of wind. He couldn't be sure what kind of sound it was. After thinking for a long time without reaching a conclusion, he could only give up.
He planned to accept The Mysterious Man's request. With The Mysterious Man assisting Daenerys, if he didn't accept now, he estimated the future Queen would no longer need him.
He took a brown clay jar from the house and placed it on The Wall by the gate.
Having dodged the stone attack, Drogon looked at the jar on The Wall and nodded with satisfaction. It seemed that properly flexing some muscle was quite effective.
He hadn't expected that his display would nearly crush the strong self-confidence Varys had built up over a long time.
After placing the jar, Varys stood in the courtyard for a while before returning indoors.
Drogon flew back to the previous rooftop and continued writing the next step of his plan. Being unable to speak is such a hassle! He complained in his heart.
After finishing, he placed it back on the table just as before. Not long after, Varys came out of the room. He wasn't surprised to see the parchment again, nor did he try to find the messenger.
