Chapter 29 - Combee and Honey

Bonus Chapter ✨

Unaware of what had happened after his departure, Chen Mo had already arrived at a flower field of modest size. Judging by its layout, it was likely artificially cultivated back when the forest park was still operating normally. Some man-made fences could still be seen around it.

"So beautiful."

Although it no longer received human care, the flower field was clearly still thriving. As a gentle breeze swept through, carrying the fragrance of blossoms, both Chen Mo and Pichu couldn't help but wear looks of pure enjoyment.

At the same time, the entire livestream chat was going wild, furiously tagging a certain someone.

[Brother Hui, are you watching the stream?]

[Brother Hui, hurry up and come look at the flower field!]

[Brother Hui, compared to the flower field you guys ran into last time, how does this one stack up?]

[Hahahaha, even though I don't really want to bully Brother Hui, this flower field really is beautiful. Brother Hui, remember to protect the environment next time!]

Inside a luxury villa.

Ah Hui, who had been lounging comfortably on the sofa, sipping soda and watching the livestream, nearly smashed his phone when he saw the barrage of comments popping up.

Why are they bringing this up again?! Are they just out to get me or what?!

Grinding his teeth, Ah Hui sent out a highly visible message.

[Brother Mo, make me a moderator too! I'll wipe all these guys out!]

Seeing his sponsor speak up, Chen Mo smiled.

"I can give you moderator status, but I hope you'll go easy on them."

[Haha, just kidding, Brother Mo. I'm stuck at home all day with nothing to do anyway—I can help you manage the chat.]

Originally, Chen Mo's livestream had been managed by a few generous patrons, but with his popularity skyrocketing recently and the volume of messages surging, one or two moderators were no longer enough to deal with the occasional spam and troublemakers.

Since Ah Hui was willing, that was naturally a good thing.

Chen Mo set Ah Hui as a moderator. After taking a few commemorative photos with his phone, he prepared to move on.

However—

Just at that moment.

Pichu suddenly lifted its head and pointed in a certain direction with its little paw.

"Pichu, pichu!"

A buzzing sound filled the air. Chen Mo looked over and saw rows of bee-like creatures flying toward the flower field.

Upon closer inspection, the biggest difference between them and ordinary bees became apparent. Their front bodies looked like three honeycomb cells fused together, each with a face. On the two upper faces, there was an antenna each, and small wings fluttered at their sides.

[Those are Pokémon too, right?]

[No need to ask—if they look weird and we've never seen them before, they're definitely Pokémon.]

[Mo-bao, give us an introduction!]

Chen Mo didn't hesitate—Pokédex points were there to be earned.

"You're right. These are Pokémon, and a very special kind at that—a three-in-one Pokémon. Their academic name is Combee. As the name suggests, they're formed by the combination of three individuals. What's worth noting is that they're already three-in-one at birth, and each individual has a slightly different preference for nectar."

That immediately piqued the chat's interest.

[That's so special—three of them make one Pokémon from birth?!]

[Mo-bao, do the individuals inside a Combee ever argue with each other?]

[What if one of them gets angry? Do they fight? And if they do, how does that even work?]

What kind of bizarre questions are these…

Chen Mo shook his head helplessly, selectively ignoring some of the overly enthusiastic inquiries and answering a few more normal ones instead.

"From morning till night, Combee are constantly collecting nectar. Everything they do is for their colony and their queen."

"And within Combee colonies, over eighty percent are male. Due to the special nature of their species, only female Combee can evolve into a Vespiquen. That's why, in most wild colonies, there's usually only a single Vespiquen."

The Combee didn't pay much attention to Chen Mo, who was standing at the edge of the flower field. They soon flew past him and headed toward the center of the field.

These diligent gardeners of the flower field began another round of work.

But speaking of Combee—

Chen Mo was reminded of another one of his target tasks.

Collecting ingredients unique to Pokémon.

In the nutritional recipe Chen Mo had purchased from the system specifically for Pichu, there were two especially important core ingredients. The first was a special fruit known as an Apricorn.

Unlike ordinary fruits or Berries, Apricorns couldn't be used directly. They usually had to be processed into Apricorn juice before consumption.

Moreover, aside from their nutritional value, Apricorns had another crucial use—they could be used to craft Poké Balls for capturing Pokémon. This was the origin of Poké Balls.

That alone was a major reason why Chen Mo had chosen that recipe.

Even if he couldn't make use of them immediately, gathering some to study wouldn't hurt.

As for the second main ingredient, it was related to the Combee in front of him—Honey.

Chen Mo remembered that in the Pokémon world, this special item could be smeared onto a golden tree known as a "Honey Tree" to attract wild Pokémon.

And in the games, aside from purchasing Honey from NPCs, wild Combee could also carry it.

That was easy enough to understand—after all, Honey was essentially a sweet, fragrant nectar collected by Pokémon.

"So what these Combee are doing right now… is this the process of producing Honey?"

Chen Mo's curiosity was sparked. Instead of leaving the flower field as planned, he decided to stay for the time being.

If the Combee really did produce Honey later, how should he go about asking for some to use himself?

Chen Mo fell into deep thought.

Using in-game methods—battling and capturing a Combee—was obviously unsuitable for his current situation. Stealing it outright was even more out of the question.

So what could he do…?

Just as Chen Mo was at a loss over how to build a relationship with these Combee, who were wholly devoted to nectar, another buzzing sound rang out.

At first, Chen Mo thought another batch of Combee had arrived at the flower field.

But when he casually looked toward the source of the sound, he realized it wasn't Combee—it was another bee-like Pokémon: Beedrill.

Perhaps drawn by the fragrance drifting from the flower field, or perhaps having spotted suitable prey, several Beedrill were raising the thick, white stingers on their forearms, wings vibrating as they rapidly closed in on the field.

Sensing the intrusion of foreign enemies, the Combee that were gathering nectar immediately panicked. Without a Vespiquen to command them, these young bees were clearly at a loss.

Yet to Chen Mo—

This scene painted a very different picture.

"Maybe… this is an opportunity for me."
