Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 : Walking Steak

"Excuse me?" Dean said, leaning slightly forward when he noticed Madison still staring past him.

Madison blinked and snapped out of it. "Sorry. Please… have a seat."

She gestured toward the sofa.

The three of them sat down, Sam and Dean on either side while Henry took the middle. Madison pulled a chair across from them and sat facing the trio.

"You must be pretty shaken up," Sam said.

Madison nodded faintly. "Yeah… I guess you could say that."

Sam continued, "You were Nate Mulligan's assistant, right?"

"For two years," Madison replied. "Yeah."

Dean leaned back slightly, watching her carefully. "So you knew him pretty well."

Madison gave a small shrug. "Probably knew more about him than he knew about himself."

"Nate was… nice."

She paused.

Dean caught the hesitation immediately. "But?"

Madison sighed. "Nothing serious. I mean… he had a few scotches and started hitting on anyone within a five-mile radius. You know the type."

Dean nodded knowingly. "Yeah. I do, actually."

Sam shot him a quick look but kept the conversation moving.

"Did he have any enemies?"

Madison frowned slightly. "What do you mean? It looked like an animal attack."

"Right. Yeah. We're just covering all the bases. Anyone who might've had a beef with him? Former client… maybe someone else?"

Madison shifted uncomfortably in her chair.

"This is kind of embarrassing," she admitted. "But my ex-boyfriend… Kurt."

"Kurt has a last name?" Sam asked.

"Mueller," she said. "After we broke up he went kind of nuts."

Dean leaned forward a little more. "How nuts?"

Madison looked down briefly before answering. "He's been stalking me."

Madison continued, "He got it into his head that something was going on between Nate and me."

"Did he confront him?" Sam asked.

"Yeah," Madison said. "He showed up at the office. Started yelling at Nate, accusing him of sleeping with me. Then he threw a punch before security dragged him out."

Dean nodded slowly. "Sounds charming."

Madison sighed. "I was lucky I didn't lose my job over it."

"When was the last time you saw Kurt?"

Madison took a small breath before answering.

"A few nights ago," she said quietly. "Actually… the night Nate died."

Dean and Sam exchanged a quick glance.

"I was grabbing drinks at this bar after work, just trying to relax a little. Then Kurt showed up."

Dean tilted his head. "And?"

"Nothing," Madison said, shaking her head slowly. "That's what was weird."

Sam frowned. "Weird how?"

Madison looked down for a moment, remembering.

"He didn't come over. Didn't say anything. He just stood there across the room… watching me."

Madison's voice dropped slightly.

"And then he was just… gone."

"To tell you the truth," she admitted, her eyes flicking nervously between them, "he scares me."

The questions were done, and Sam finally stood.

"Well, thank you for your time," he said politely. "If we need anything else, we'll let you know."

Dean pushed himself up from the couch beside him, straightening his jacket while Henry stood as well, ready to leave.

They were already heading toward the door when Madison spoke.

"Wait."

The three of them paused.

Madison looked a little hesitant now.

"If you don't mind… could I get your number?" she asked. "Just in case. My ex… he's been stalking me. If something happens, it might help to have someone to call."

Dean immediately smiled like he had been waiting for that moment the entire conversation.

"Yeah, sure. My number is—"

Sam suddenly grabbed Dean's arm and pulled it down before he could finish.

Dean frowned. "What?"

Sam tilted his head slightly.

Madison wasn't looking at Dean.

She was looking at Henry.

Henry blinked.

"Mine?" he asked, genuinely confused.

He hadn't even said much during the conversation.

For a second he wondered if she just liked his face.

Still confused, he pulled out his phone and gave her the number.

Dean stared at him like someone had just stolen his pie.

Sam quietly looked away to hide the amusement on his face.

As they stepped out of Madison's apartment and the door closed behind them, Dean stopped in the hallway and looked at Henry like he had just witnessed a crime.

"Are you kidding me?" Dean said under his breath.

Henry frowned. "What?"

Dean pointed back at the door they had just exited. "I've been laying down the charm, asking the questions, doing the whole detective thing—and she asks you for your number?"

Sam tried to keep a straight face but failed.

Dean looked at him. "Don't."

Sam shrugged lightly. "I didn't say anything."

Dean shook his head and started walking toward the stairs. "Unbelievable."

Henry followed behind them, still confused. "I didn't even do anything."

"Exactly!" Dean said, turning halfway around as they walked. "You sat there like a piece of furniture."

Sam chuckled quietly.

Dean pointed at Henry again. "And somehow that worked."

Sam shrugged. "Maybe she likes quiet guys."

Dean scoffed. "Yeah, well, next time I'm keeping my mouth shut."

They stepped outside into the parking lot where the Impala waited.

Sam's expression shifted back to serious as he looked toward the building.

"Jokes aside," Sam said, "Kurt Mueller might still be worth checking out."

Dean nodded and leaned against the Impala. "Yeah. Angry ex-boyfriend who already punched the victim? That's not exactly subtle."

"You think he's the wolf?"

Dean shook his head slowly. "Maybe."

Sam glanced back toward Madison's apartment window.

"Or maybe he's just the guy we're supposed to think is the wolf," Sam finished, his eyes drifting back toward Madison's apartment door.

Henry leaned his shoulder against the Impala and thought for a moment before speaking. "Or maybe it's her front-door neighbor."

Dean turned his head immediately. "That dude?" He shook his head. "He didn't look anything like a werewolf. Just looked like a normal guy."

Henry shrugged slightly. "Normal dudes are the scariest sometimes."

Dean snorted at that. "Man, you've been hanging around us way too long if that's your logic now."

While they talked, Henry was thinking about something else entirely.

Why was Madison even interested in me?

The answer came to him a second later.

Revenant blood.

His blood now carried dense supernatural energy, something creatures with heightened instincts could sense even if they didn't understand it consciously.

Henry's expression shifted slightly as the realization settled in.

Right… that explains it.

Madison hadn't been looking at him because she liked him.

The wolf inside her had sensed something.

To that instinct, he probably looked like concentrated supernatural energy wrapped in human skin.

And then another memory flashed in his mind.

Glenn staring at him in the hallway.

Henry sighed internally.

Great. To monsters I probably look like a walking steak.
