Chapter 39 - “A Shadow in the Celebration”

The week flew by in a whirlwind of fittings, invitations, and final wedding preparations. Anna and Oliver had perfected their routine: mornings filled with work, afternoons with meetings, and evenings stolen together in quiet corners of the city.

But even in this happy haze, a small shadow began creeping in.

Oliver sat in his office reviewing contracts when his assistant, Mr. Lewis, cleared his throat.

"Sir… I received a call from Mr. Carter."

Oliver's jaw tightened. Carter — the business rival who had been subtly competing with him for months. Always polite on the surface, but always calculating.

"What does he want?" Oliver asked, trying to keep his voice steady.

"He requested a meeting during your engagement celebrations… seems strategic."

Oliver leaned back, rubbing his forehead. "Perfect timing, as always. I'll handle it. But not today."

Meanwhile, Anna was in her mother's room, picking accessories for the upcoming engagement party. Emily and Sophia had joined her, offering suggestions and teasing her endlessly.

"Anna, you look like a princess," Sophia said, holding up a pair of delicate earrings.

"And you look like royalty stealing the spotlight," Emily added, winking at her.

Anna laughed, brushing off the teasing. "Focus, girls. This is about me… and Oliver."

Her phone buzzed. It was a simple message from Oliver:

Oliver: Don't worry about Carter. Tonight, it's just us.

Anna smiled, slipping the phone into her clutch.

That evening, the engagement party shimmered with golden lights and soft music. Friends and family mingled, laughter filling the air.

Anna and Oliver moved through the crowd hand-in-hand, their smiles effortless, their eyes often meeting with quiet intimacy.

"You're glowing," Oliver whispered as they reached a quiet balcony overlooking the city.

"You mean my glow of stress from wedding planning?" Anna teased.

"No," he said, pulling her gently closer. "The glow that only comes from being with the person you love."

From across the room, Mr. Carter observed, pretending to sip champagne while calculating his next move. He had noticed how Anna and Oliver were inseparable — and it irritated him more than he cared to admit. A subtle comment to a mutual acquaintance, a question during the party — nothing overt, but enough to plant tension.

Oliver noticed the subtle look, his jaw tightening. He kissed Anna's hand lightly, grounding himself.

"Nothing tonight will touch us," he whispered.

Anna leaned into him, trusting him. "I know. Let them try."

Later, in a quiet corner, they shared a soft, lingering kiss — gentle, intimate, full of promise. The crowd around them seemed to fade, the golden lights blurring into a halo around their little world.

For Anna, it was more than romance. It was reassurance. A reminder that no rival, no misunderstanding, no shadow could dim what they had built together — the patience, the trust, the love that had survived ten years and now faced the world openly.

As the night ended and guests began leaving, Oliver wrapped his arm around Anna.

"Tomorrow," he murmured, "we face Carter together. But tonight… just us."

Anna rested her head on his shoulder. "Tonight is perfect," she whispered.

And in that quiet certainty, the shadows outside their love felt powerless.
