Chapter 89 - Chapter 89: Shadows Over New York City

Chapter 89: Shadows Over New York City

(Jay Jay's POV)

The evening in New York was quiet, almost deceptively calm.

I lounged on the velvet armchair in the corner of the penthouse, scrolling lazily through my phone. The city lights cast a warm glow over the room, reflecting off the skyscrapers outside. For a moment, I let myself relax.

And then the message popped up.

A secure message from the Obsidian Circle.

My heart skipped a beat before a familiar chill settled over my body.

"Keizer Watson is making a move. Target: Keifer Watson. NYC. Discreet. Priority Alpha."

I froze.

Keizer Watson… his own father. The thought was unthinkable, but the evidence was here, clear and undeniable.

I swallowed hard and looked around the room.

Not literally, of course—Keifer was in the kitchen, casually humming, unaware of the storm quietly brewing just a floor above him.

I took a deep breath and opened the secure group chat.

Sophia: "Jay… are you seeing this?"

Jay Jay: "I see it. Keifer's father wants him gone. If this gets out, it'll ruin everything."

Savannah: "We need a plan. Fast. NYC isn't as safe as he thinks."

Olivia: "He can't know. At least, not yet."

Mia: "Absolutely. If Keifer finds out, he'll act recklessly. We need stealth."

Amy: "Agreed. We keep him in the dark. Focus on containment and protection."

I leaned forward, my fingers flying over the keyboard as I typed back.

Jay Jay: "Understood. I'll coordinate. No alerts to Keifer. We move quietly. We protect. We neutralize. He won't even suspect a thing."

The room seemed to shrink around me as the gravity of the situation sank in. Keifer's father… the man who had once been a distant, authoritative figure in his life… was now a direct threat. And I was the one who had to make sure Keifer never saw it coming.

Sophia leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms with her trademark calm precision.

Sophia: "We'll need positions, contingencies, extraction points. Jay Jay, you're in charge here. You've got the local knowledge, the timing, the leverage. Don't hesitate."

I nodded.

Even though my heart was racing, I forced a steady outward composure.

Jay Jay: "Understood. I'll make the call. Everyone else, be ready to mobilize at a moment's notice. Keifer has no idea what's coming."

Amy leaned forward, lowering her voice.

Amy: "How do we handle Keifer's father without tipping Keifer off? He's smart. Suspicious. He'll notice the smallest inconsistency."

I exhaled, thinking through the options.

Jay Jay: "We create controlled diversions. We isolate Keizer from his resources. And we make sure Keifer's path never intersects with danger. He won't see it, but he'll benefit from it."

Sophia nodded approvingly.

Sophia: "You're thinking strategically, Jay Jay. That's exactly what this requires. Keep him safe. Keep the circle intact. And most importantly… keep him in the dark until it's over."

As the plans took shape, a nagging thought crept into the back of my mind.

Keifer.

He was going to notice something.

He always did.

Even when he didn't know the full picture, he could sense it.

A shift in behavior. A shadow of secrecy. A pattern he didn't understand.

And I knew… the moment I moved too obviously, he'd become suspicious.

I glanced at the floor below, where the soft hum of the city mingled with Keifer's occasional chuckle in the kitchen. My heart ached at the thought of keeping this from him. But there was no other way.

No other way if I wanted to protect him.

Savannah, ever the meticulous planner, laid out the first step.

Savannah: "We need surveillance. Cameras, teams on the ground, Keizer's movements tracked in real-time. Jay Jay, you handle the NYC logistics. Olivia, Mia, you coordinate on the perimeter."

I nodded again, mentally dividing the city into zones. Every street corner, every alley, every potential access point Keizer could use had to be mapped.

Jay Jay: "Got it. I want redundancies. Multiple backups. If anything slips, we intercept immediately."

Mia: "Do we know how well-funded he is here? Keizer's wealth is notorious—he could hire local mercenaries."

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

Sophia: "Which is why we work preemptively. Don't wait for him to act. Anticipate. Predict. Dominate."

I smiled faintly, a flash of my old Obsidian Circle training resurfacing.

Jay Jay: "Exactly. And no one moves unless I authorize it. Not a single detail overlooked."

Hours passed.

Maps, surveillance feeds, and encrypted communication lines.

Plans layered over plans, contingencies stacked upon contingencies.

And through it all, my mind kept returning to Keifer.

The thought of him walking through NYC unaware, unprotected, sent a shiver down my spine.

He was so stubborn. So capable. So infuriatingly perceptive.

And I had to keep this from him.

Meanwhile, below us, Keifer hummed a tune as he cooked dinner.

He probably had no idea.

No idea that a storm of danger was descending upon his life.

No idea that his own father had put a target on his back.

No idea that the Obsidian Circle, loyal to me, was moving across the city in perfect synchrony.

Hours later, I sat back, rubbing my temples.

Sophia: "We're ready for phase one. But remember—Keifer must remain oblivious. If he senses even a hint, he could jeopardize everything."

Jay Jay: "Understood. I'll keep him busy. Keep him distracted. And keep him safe."

Amy: "You're carrying a lot on your shoulders, Jay Jay."

Jay Jay: "I know. But it's worth it. Always worth it."

As we finalized the plans, a flicker of movement caught my eye.

Keifer.

Standing in the doorway.

Watching.

Not suspicious yet.

Just curious.

I forced a smile, tucking away my panic.

Jay Jay: "Keifer! You're just in time. Dinner's almost ready."

He tilted his head, a small frown forming.

Keifer: "You've been up here… a long time. What are you doing?"

I laughed softly, too lightly.

Jay Jay: "Just… working on some… projects for school."

He narrowed his eyes, studying me.

Keifer: "Hmm. Projects. Sure."

I felt my pulse spike.

He was close to noticing.

Too close.

And I knew… I had only moments before his intuition would kick in.

I forced myself to maintain composure as he walked closer.

Keifer: "You seem… tense. Everything alright?"

Jay Jay: "Of course. Just… focused."

He raised an eyebrow, not convinced.

Keifer: "Focused, huh? You sure? You seem… distracted."

Jay Jay: "No, really. Just… a lot on my mind."

He smirked.

Keifer: "You always have a lot on your mind. But I know when you're hiding something. You're terrible at it."

My stomach flipped.

Keifer could always tell.

Even when I thought I was careful.

Even when no one else would notice.

Even now.

Sophia's voice buzzed in my earpiece, subtle, urgent:

"Jay Jay… keep calm. He's close. Don't let him see anything."

I nodded subtly, swallowing the panic.

Keifer stepped closer, his presence overwhelming, comforting, and dangerous all at once.

Keifer: "You're hiding something from me, aren't you?"

Jay Jay: "…Maybe."

He smiled that infuriating, knowing smile.

Keifer: "Don't. I'll find out anyway."

My stomach tightened.

Keifer was right.

He always was.

And as I stood there, caught between the safety of secrecy and the storm of love, I knew one thing for certain…

Keifer Watson might be the only person in the world who could see through me, but I would protect him from everything—even if it meant hiding the darkest truth.

Even if it meant keeping him in the dark while danger lurked closer than ever.

Because nothing… nothing… was more important than keeping him alive.

And I would do whatever it took.
