Chapter 98 - The Truth of the Uchiha Clan Massacre (Part II)

"Because the one who came to kill them was their own son," Nagi said quietly, "your father and mother chose to respect Itachi's decision. They did not resist. And before dying, they asked him to take care of you."

Sasuke felt as if he had just heard something utterly absurd.

"Have Itachi take care of me?! Nagi, are you joking? He tried to kill me! He slaughtered our entire clan!"

"Which is why," Nagi replied evenly, "we must now talk about your brother — Itachi Uchiha."

Sasuke forced himself to calm down.

"…Go on."

Itachi's Beginning

"When Itachi was four years old, your father brought him to a battlefield during the Third Great Ninja War.

There, he witnessed the cruelty of war firsthand. He felt the fragility of life.

From that day on, he came to loathe war."

Nagi's voice remained steady.

"He pursued knowledge and power in order to better understand the world.

He was intelligent, rational, and thoughtful — but still a child. His worldview was not yet fully formed.

Caught between the ideology of the Will of Fire and the pride of the Uchiha Clan, he became conflicted… and gradually extreme."

Sasuke listened without interrupting.

"Your father placed him in the ANBU as the clan's informant.

The village leadership, in turn, treated him as their own informant.

Thus, Itachi became a double agent."

Nagi paused.

"But deeply influenced by the Will of Fire, he ultimately sided with the village."

Father and son began drifting apart.

"Itachi concealed things from FugaShiranui Kū. But do you truly think FugaShiranui Kū — an experienced clan head — couldn't see through his own son?"

Sasuke's breath caught.

"Your father knew," Nagi said softly. "He simply chose not to expose it."

Under the persuasion of the leadership and the ideological pull of the Will of Fire, Itachi grew to believe the Uchiha were narrow-minded.

"He believed he alone understood the bigger picture.

But in FugaShiranui Kū's eyes… he was still just a child."

The Awakening of the Mangekyō

"At this stage, Itachi was not yet completely extreme.

But when Shisui Uchiha died before his eyes… he awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan."

Nagi's tone hardened slightly.

"The Mangekyō amplifies more than power.

The Uchiha are a proud clan. When one awakens the Mangekyō, that pride often intensifies.

It would be more accurate to say Itachi was always inclined toward extremism.

After awakening the Mangekyō, he became convinced that his thinking was correct — that his previous limitations were merely due to insufficient power."

He continued:

"He looked down upon clan members who spoke endlessly of 'Uchiha honor' without possessing comparable strength.

Meanwhile, tensions escalated. FugaShiranui Kū felt increasingly powerless and began seriously planning a coup."

The Betrayal

"Itachi feared that if the Uchiha and Konoha went to war, the likely outcome would be the annihilation of the Uchiha, severe damage to the village, and invasion from other nations.

Another Great Ninja War.

And no matter the outcome… you would suffer."

Sasuke clenched his fists.

"So Itachi informed the Third Hokage and the elders about the coup."

Nagi nodded.

"Hiruzen Sarutobi hoped for a peaceful resolution. He hesitated.

But Danzō Shimura understood that Hiruzen would only delay."

Nagi's eyes darkened.

"So Danzō manipulated the darkness in Itachi's heart.

He presented Itachi with a choice:

Exterminate the clan yourself — and spare your little brother.

Or face total eradication."

Sasuke's hands trembled.

"And Itachi… agreed."

"Yes," Nagi said. "Believing he was protecting you."

Unbeknownst to Itachi, every step he took fell exactly within Danzō's calculations.

Shisui and Kotoamatsukami

"Let's return to Shisui," Nagi continued.

"Unlike Itachi, Shisui did not look down upon the Uchiha. He sought reconciliation between the clan and the village.

He revealed the existence of Kotoamatsukami to the leadership."

Sasuke frowned.

"Kotoamatsukami?"

"A Mangekyō Sharingan technique capable of infiltrating a target's mind and altering their will — without them ever realizing it.

Absolute manipulation."

Sasuke felt a chill.

"Danzō coveted that power.

He ambushed Shisui and stole his right eye.

Wounded and knowing Danzō would never stop pursuing him, Shisui entrusted his remaining left eye to Itachi before taking his own life."

Nagi looked directly at Sasuke.

"Thus, Itachi gained Shisui's left Mangekyō Sharingan."

The 'Perfect' Plan

"With Kotoamatsukami in his possession, Itachi conceived what he believed to be a 'perfect' solution."

Sasuke swallowed hard.

"A plan to control someone's path in life — without them ever knowing."

Nagi's voice lowered.

"Sasuke… who do you think he intended to control?"

Sasuke stared at him in disbelief.

"No… don't tell me…"

His voice shook.

"…Me?"

Nagi did not immediately answer.

His silence was answer enough.
