Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: “Magic”

Of course that wasn't right.

Lynn thought it over, unconsciously raising a hand to lightly pinch his chin, and gradually arrived at a bit of a guess.

What a pity. I can't be certain, so it can only stay at the guessing stage for now.

I'll deal with it in the future. If it really is like that, then I've ended up owing someone a favor without even noticing...

Those thoughts did not take much of Lynn's time. By the time he came back to himself, Escoffier was still nodding in half-understanding.

"So, has your bad luck problem been completely solved now?"

She remembered the enormous changes that had suddenly happened to Lynn.

Although she still did not know what exactly was going on, if Lynn did not take the initiative to tell her, she had no intention of prying to the bottom of it. She only wanted to know whether that strange bad luck that had been troubling him had truly been resolved.

"Of course. Otherwise, why would I be in such a good mood?"

Lynn replied with a smiling reassurance, like handing the girl a perfect dose of peace of mind.

Just then, an ominous tremor suddenly began to rise from beneath their feet.

"This is bad—the ship is starting to sink!"

Escoffier's expression changed slightly.

Under the effects of Lynn's previous bad luck, this ship had already been battered to the brink of collapse by the giant sea beast's attack. After that, it had suffered several more hits, and on top of that, it had also been caught up in Lynn's earlier burning and explosions. The fact that it was only now truly beginning to sink already showed remarkable tenacity.

This time, however, Escoffier did not hurriedly suggest fleeing. Instead, she looked at Lynn with anticipation.

She still remembered that earlier, Lynn had told her to watch his performance. Surely he had not meant to wait until now just so they could jump off the ship in a sorry state and run for their lives?

And Lynn, as expected, did not disappoint her.

"Relax. Let me show you a magic trick."

As he spoke, Lynn raised a hand and narrowed his eyes slightly, as though sensing something.

"If I were willing to perform this trick out in public, every so-called master magician would have to admit defeat..."

Hearing that, the anticipation on Escoffier's face deepened even further.

She knew that although Lynn called it that, what he was about to do definitely was not something as simple as a magic trick. Magic, perhaps, might be closer.

But whatever it was, one thing was certain: it would either be deeply shocking or extremely entertaining.

She just did not know which kind it would be.

"It's starting. Don't blink. Three—two—"

"One!"

Snap!

Lynn snapped his fingers.

In that instant, Escoffier only felt as though she had drifted into a brief daze. The world around her suddenly became completely different from before. The countless colors that had once existed everywhere were reduced to only a few sparse kinds, but every one of them felt extraordinarily friendly to her. One radiated warmth, one nourished vitality, and one felt so light and airy that it was as though it wanted to carry her up into the sky.

Surrounded by them, she even had the feeling that anything she wished for could come true.

But after that single instant, everything returned to its original state. The night sky was still a deep blue, with stars and moon still scattered across it, and the ship beneath their feet was still—

Wait, how had the ship beneath their feet become as good as new?

No, not even a newly built cargo ship would be this new. At the very least, it could not possibly be so spotless that there was not even a trace of dust or a single footprint. Every plank of the deck looked brand new.

"Ah!"

Escoffier let out a cry of surprise and stared at the deck beneath her feet, examining it carefully in astonishment.

The place where the two of them stood had not been attacked by the sea beast, but when Lynn had been experimenting with the usage of the Pyro Authority, he had accidentally ignited part of the surrounding area. Although the flames had gone out not long afterward, quite a few scorched black marks had been left behind.

But now, not just this patch beneath their feet—even the bow, which had endured many of the sea beast's attacks, and even the places that had been caught in Lynn's compressed fireball and blasted into ruin and annihilation, had all been restored to their original state, looking newer than new.

"Well?"

Lynn lightly patted Escoffier on the back, indicating that she could inspect things however she liked.

Sinking?

Let whoever wants to sink go sink. In any case, it had nothing to do with this ship anymore.

Escoffier cooperatively began checking all over the deck. She found that everything truly had been completely renewed. All damage had vanished, including even the wear and tear from ordinary daily use.

"Can I go look inside the cabins?"

After looking around for a while, she ran back and asked Lynn.

The ship itself was not actually what interested her. What really fascinated her was the "magic" from just now—

As she had said before, she knew perfectly well that this was not a magic trick. But she still wanted to find some clue, to see whether she could figure out what method Lynn had used to accomplish it.

"Of course."

Lynn naturally had no objection. After thinking for a moment, he added,

"Since you're going in anyway, make a trip to the cargo hold and bring back the Solid Phlogiston bombs. We won't need them now, so don't waste them."

"As for that Les, we can deal with it some other way."

After saying that, he watched Escoffier walk into the ship's interior, while he himself remained where he was and once again sank into thought.

Escoffier was definitely not going to find any clues.

Because the "magic" just now was, in essence, a power that did not belong to this world.

From beyond the world, we obtain the power to negate the world... who said that again? Dainsleif, or the Abyss Sibling?

It actually is a little fitting... though what I'm doing isn't negation, but... hmm.

Modification.

Or rather, tuning.

World-Tuning?

That sounds a little improper.

Whatever. As long as it works.
