Chapter 12 - Chapter -12 The First Match

The morning sun had just begun to rise above the tall trees surrounding Karn's cricket academy. A soft golden light spread slowly across the dusty ground, touching the practice nets, the worn-out benches, and the long green outfield that had witnessed countless hours of training.

Usually, when Arjun arrived at the ground, the place was calm.

A few trainees would be jogging lazily around the boundary. Some would stretch their arms, while others would quietly practice shadow batting in a corner.

But today…

Something was different.

As Arjun walked through the academy gate with his kit bag hanging over his shoulder, he immediately noticed the unusual energy in the air.

Almost every trainee was already there.

Some were warming up near the pitch. A group of bowlers were discussing field placements. Two players were arguing about batting order while laughing loudly.

The entire ground buzzed with excitement.

Arjun slowed his steps.

His eyes scanned the field curiously.

"Why is everyone here so early today?" he wondered.

Normally, he was one of the first to arrive.

But today he felt like the last person to know something important.

He spotted a familiar tall figure standing near the center of the ground.

Karn.

Karn stood near the pitch with his hands behind his back, silently observing the players. His calm posture made him look like a general watching his soldiers prepare for battle.

Arjun walked quickly toward him.

"Karn sir… what's happening today?" Arjun asked, slightly out of breath.

Karn slowly turned his head toward him.

For a few seconds, he didn't say anything.

Then a small smile appeared on his face.

"Today," Karn said calmly, "we are going to play a match."

Arjun blinked in surprise.

"A match?"

"Yes," Karn replied. "A friendly match."

He looked across the ground at the trainees.

"Just among ourselves."

Arjun felt a small spark of excitement inside him.

Before he could say anything, Karn added another sentence.

"And you are going to play too."

For a moment, Arjun thought he had heard wrong.

"Me…?" he asked softly.

Karn nodded.

But before Arjun could react further, another voice suddenly interrupted them.

"Sir… that's not fair."

Both of them turned toward the voice.

One of the senior trainees had stepped forward. He was a strong player who had been training at the academy for more than a year.

Several other players stood behind him.

The senior trainee crossed his arms.

"Arjun just started training recently," he said. "If he joins our team, we will lose."

A few players nodded silently.

The words hit Arjun like a sudden punch.

He lowered his eyes slightly.

Maybe they were right.

Compared to the others, he was still new. Many of them had played matches before. Some had even participated in district-level tournaments.

Arjun had only just begun his journey.

Karn looked at the trainee calmly.

His expression didn't change.

Then he spoke.

"It's okay if you lose."

The players looked surprised.

"This is not a tournament," Karn continued. "It's just a friendly match."

He pointed toward Arjun.

"And Arjun belongs to this academy."

His voice became slightly firmer.

"He is not an outsider."

The ground became silent.

"If he trains here… he plays here," Karn finished.

No one spoke after that.

The senior trainee slowly stepped back.

Arjun looked at Karn with quiet gratitude.

Without another word, Karn clapped his hands loudly.

"Alright!"

The sound echoed across the ground.

"Enough talking."

He pointed toward the pitch.

"Let's divide the teams."

The trainees quickly gathered around.

Karn began separating them carefully.

But he wasn't choosing randomly.

His sharp eyes observed every player's strengths — batsmen, bowlers, fielders. He balanced the teams deliberately.

After a few minutes, the two sides were formed.

Team A

Team B

Arjun stood silently among the group, waiting to hear his name.

Then Karn looked toward him.

"Arjun… Team B."

Arjun nodded and walked toward the players standing on the right side.

Some of them looked curious.

A few looked doubtful.

But nobody said anything now.

Just then, one of the trainees asked Karn,

"Sir… which team are you playing for?"

Karn shook his head.

"I'm not playing."

The players looked confused.

Instead, Karn stepped toward the boundary line.

"I'm observing."

The trainees became silent again.

Karn continued speaking.

"In a few days, a club tournament will begin."

The moment he said those words, every player became serious.

"I need fifteen quality players," Karn said.

He raised one finger.

"Eleven will be the main team."

Then four fingers.

"Four will be substitutes."

His eyes scanned every player standing there.

"This match will help me decide."

Suddenly, the atmosphere of the friendly match changed.

It was no longer just a casual game.

It had become a test.

The Toss

Both team captains walked toward the center of the pitch.

The players gathered around them.

The coin flipped high into the morning air.

Everyone watched it spin.

Then it landed.

"Heads," the captain announced.

Team A won the toss.

Their captain smiled confidently.

"We'll bat first."

Team B players quickly moved to their fielding positions.

Arjun adjusted his gloves and stretched his shoulders.

His heart was beating fast.

This was his first match inside the academy.

Even though it was a friendly match, the pressure felt real.

As the players spread across the field, Team B's captain walked toward him.

"Arjun."

"Yes?" Arjun replied.

"You will bowl the first over."

Arjun's eyes widened.

"Me?"

Several players nearby looked shocked.

One of them whispered to another,

"First over? Really?"

Even the opening batsman from Team A smirked slightly.

But the captain raised his hand calmly.

"Karn is trusting him," he said.

He looked directly at Arjun.

"So I'm trusting him too."

Arjun felt something heavy settle inside his chest.

Responsibility.

From the boundary line, Karn stood silently with his arms crossed.

Watching.

Always watching.

Arjun picked up the red ball.

It felt slightly rough in his fingers.

He walked toward the bowling mark slowly.

The entire ground seemed quiet now.

The opening batsman tapped his bat confidently on the pitch.

"Come on, kid," he muttered.

Arjun ignored him.

He stared at the stumps.

Karn's training echoed in his mind.

Control your breath.

Focus on the seam.

Trust your rhythm.

Arjun began his run-up.

One step.

Two steps.

Three steps.

His arm rotated smoothly.

The ball left his fingers.

It flew through the air toward the batsman.

The batsman stepped forward aggressively, ready to attack.

But the ball swung slightly at the last moment.

The bat missed.

The ball flew past and smashed into the wicketkeeper's gloves.

"HOWZZAT!" several fielders shouted instinctively.

But the umpire shook his head.

Not out.

Still…

The delivery had surprised everyone.

The batsman looked slightly annoyed.

Arjun walked back to his mark again.

This time, his heartbeat was calmer.

Something inside him had changed.

The fear that had been there a moment ago was slowly fading.

Now he felt something else rising.

Confidence.

He turned around and looked toward the boundary.

Karn stood there, watching him.

No smile.

No reaction.

Just observation.

But Arjun understood something clearly at that moment.

This match wasn't just about winning.

This match was about proving something.

Not to the others.

But to himself.

Arjun tightened his grip on the ball again.

The morning wind moved softly across the ground.

The batsman prepared for the next delivery.

Arjun started running again.

The first match of his cricket journey had begun.

And this was only the beginning.
