Chapter 15 - Chapter - 15 The First Strike

The players slowly moved to their fielding positions as the third over ended.

A thin layer of dust floated across the academy ground as boots scraped the surface. The morning sun had climbed higher now, casting longer shadows across the pitch.

Arjun stood near the boundary for a moment, trying to steady his breathing.

Two overs earlier he had been trembling before bowling his first delivery.

Now, the rhythm of the match had begun to settle inside him.

The simple whiteboard scoreboard near the boundary had been updated again.

Team A – 17 runs for 1 wicket after 3 overs

The match was balanced.

Neither side had taken control yet.

Which meant every small moment could tilt the battle.

Near the pitch, the captain of Team B tossed the ball toward Raghav.

"Your over."

Raghav caught it confidently.

He rolled the ball in his palm and looked toward the batsman at the striker's end.

Raghav was one of the most aggressive bowlers in the academy. His bowling relied on speed and intimidation.

Where Arjun focused on rhythm and control, Raghav believed in power.

The fielders quickly adjusted their positions.

Arjun moved slightly toward deep mid-wicket this time.

The batsmen tapped their bats on the pitch and prepared again.

Raghav began walking back to his run-up mark.

He turned, took a deep breath, and started running.

His feet struck the ground heavily.

The first delivery exploded from his hand.

It was short and fast.

The batsman reacted quickly and pulled the ball toward square leg.

The shot was strong but not perfectly timed.

The ball bounced once before reaching the outfield.

Arjun ran across the grass and chased it down.

"Two! Two!" the batsman shouted.

The batsmen completed two runs before Arjun returned the ball.

The next ball came even faster.

Raghav aimed for the off stump.

The batsman defended carefully.

Dot ball.

The fielders clapped.

"Good pace!" someone shouted.

Raghav walked back again.

His third delivery was meant to be a yorker.

But it turned into a low full toss.

The batsman flicked it toward deep mid-wicket.

Arjun ran again, cutting the ball off before it reached the boundary.

The batsmen ran two runs.

The scoreboard pressure was slowly increasing.

Raghav wiped sweat from his forehead and prepared again.

The fourth ball was on a good length.

The batsman guided it toward point.

They stole a quick single.

The fifth delivery was defended again.

Another dot ball.

Raghav looked determined to finish the over strongly.

He ran in again for the final delivery.

This time he bowled a sharp bouncer.

The ball rose quickly toward the batsman's head.

The batsman ducked under it.

The ball flew past the wicketkeeper and rolled behind him.

"Run!" the non-striker shouted.

The batsmen stole one bye.

The over ended.

The scoreboard was updated again.

Team A – 23 runs for 1 wicket after 4 overs

Not a dangerous score.

But the batsmen were slowly building momentum.

Team B's captain clapped his hands loudly.

"Stay sharp!"

Then he turned toward Arjun.

"Arjun!"

Arjun looked up immediately.

"You'll bowl the fifth over."

A few players exchanged quiet glances again.

Some were still unsure about giving another over to the newcomer.

But the captain didn't hesitate.

"Karn trusted him earlier," he said.

"We'll trust him again."

The words carried weight.

Arjun walked toward the captain and accepted the ball.

The red leather felt rougher now.

It had already been hit, gripped, and thrown across the ground.

As Arjun walked toward his bowling mark, he could feel his heartbeat slowly rising again.

This over felt important.

Not because of the scoreboard.

But because Karn was watching.

The academy coach had not moved from his position near the boundary.

His arms were still folded.

His eyes were still sharp.

He wasn't watching the runs.

He was watching the players' minds.

Arjun reached his mark and turned toward the pitch.

The striker tapped his bat calmly.

This batsman had already settled into the match.

He looked comfortable.

Maybe too comfortable.

Arjun rolled the ball between his fingers.

Focus.

He inhaled deeply.

Then he began his run-up.

First Ball

His steps felt smooth.

His arm rotated naturally.

The ball landed on a good length just outside the off stump.

The batsman leaned forward and defended carefully.

The ball rolled toward point.

Dot ball.

"Good start!" the captain shouted.

Arjun turned and walked back calmly.

Second Ball

This time he bowled slightly fuller.

The batsman stepped forward and pushed the ball toward mid-on.

They ran a quick single.

The fielders returned the ball quickly.

Arjun caught it and walked back again.

Third Ball

A new batsman now stood at the striker's end.

Arjun studied him carefully.

The player looked slightly nervous.

His footwork seemed uncertain.

Arjun sensed opportunity.

He ran forward again.

The ball pitched on a perfect length.

The batsman attempted to defend.

But the ball moved inward slightly.

It struck his pad.

A loud appeal exploded across the ground.

"HOWZZAT!"

But the umpire shook his head.

Not out.

Still…

The batsman looked uncomfortable now.

Arjun walked back quietly.

He knew something.

He was getting closer.

Fourth Ball

Arjun changed his grip slightly.

He decided to bowl the same line again.

He ran forward.

The ball landed on the off-stump line.

The batsman stepped forward once more.

But this time the ball moved away sharply.

The outside edge appeared.

The ball flew quickly toward the slip region.

For a split second, the entire ground froze.

The slip fielder reacted instantly.

He dived forward with both hands stretched.

The ball dropped toward his palms.

THUD.

Caught.

For a moment there was silence.

Then the entire ground erupted.

"OUT!"

Team B players shouted with excitement.

Arjun stood frozen near the pitch.

His first wicket.

The batsman looked shocked as he stared at the slip fielder holding the ball.

Then he slowly turned and walked back toward the boundary.

Arjun's teammates rushed toward him.

"Well bowled!"

"Beautiful swing!"

Raghav slapped his back hard.

"Now that's bowling!"

Arjun smiled quietly.

His heart was racing again.

But this time the feeling was different.

It wasn't nervousness.

It was pride.

From the boundary line, Karn watched the celebration calmly.

He didn't clap.

He didn't shout.

He simply nodded slightly.

Because he understood something important.

That wicket had not come from luck.

It had come from learning.

The new batsman walked slowly toward the crease.

The fielders returned to their positions.

The celebration faded quickly.

The match continued.

Fifth Ball

Arjun returned to his mark again.

The new batsman looked cautious.

Arjun ran forward.

The ball landed outside off stump.

The batsman defended carefully.

The ball dropped near the pitch.

Dot ball.

The pressure was building again.

Sixth Ball

The final ball of the over.

Arjun wiped the sweat from his forehead.

He wanted to finish the over strongly.

From the boundary line, Karn's eyes remained fixed on him.

Arjun began his run-up again.

His steps were steady.

The ball left his hand cleanly.

It pitched on a good length.

The batsman pushed it toward cover.

"Run!" he shouted.

The batsmen completed a single.

The over ended.

The scoreboard changed once more.

Team A – 25 runs for 2 wickets after 5 overs

Team B players clapped loudly.

The momentum had shifted.

Arjun walked slowly toward the boundary.

His breathing was heavy again.

But inside his chest something had changed.

The fear that once controlled him was fading.

In its place was confidence.

From the boundary line, Karn watched him carefully.

Then he gave another small nod.

Not celebration.

Not praise.

Just acknowledgment.

But for Arjun…

That silent nod felt like the approval of a master.

Because on this quiet academy ground, under the rising morning sun…

He had taken his first wicket.
