Chapter 85 - Chapter 85

After completing those steps, the isolation controls on the operating console were activated, and one enormous reinforced glass barrier after another descended from the ceiling.

In no time, the previously spacious laboratory had been divided into layer after layer of containment.

Only after finishing all those preparations did the staff finally relax a little. Then they stood patiently in place, watching the test subjects through the glass and silently waiting for the three of them to awaken.

About ten minutes later, low growls began to echo through the room.

The central subject, the most physically powerful of the three, was the first to wake up.

His fingers twitched slightly, then began to move, and soon afterward he slowly opened a pair of blood-red eyes.

The only reassuring thing was that there was no trace of the mindless fury everyone had expected.

At this moment, Subject No. 1 seemed to have only just awakened and been stripped of his human memories.

Those red pupils were filled with pure confusion, as if he could not understand why his surroundings were full of tiny people staring up at him.

As he tried to keep looking around, fragments of dead memories suddenly began surfacing in his mind. Instinctively, he raised a hand as if to clutch his splitting head.

But the moment he lifted it, he visibly froze.

His right arm had already transformed into a gigantic limb covered in bone spurs and claws.

Once he realized something was wrong with his own body, Subject No. 1 let out a low growl, as though unable to understand the abnormal changes.

Then he slowly turned his head and suddenly noticed that his body was covered in all kinds of infusion lines.

"Roar!"

The moment he felt those dense lines wrapped around him, Subject No. 1 instinctively let out a threatening snarl and began struggling violently. As his body thrashed, a series of cracking sounds rang out, and all the tubes connected to his body snapped apart on the spot.

"Uhh! Uhh!! Uhh!!!"

After discovering that he had broken free from those lines, Subject No. 1 threw back his head and let out a burst of slurred, indistinct sounds, clearly expressing joy.

"Subject No. 1 appears to retain basic behavioral habits from his human state. Based on initial observation, although the subject has lost its memories from its human life, its brain remains highly active. It retains simple intelligence and shows clear differences from biological Tyrants and pure zombie-type organisms."

"Estimated learning ability is comparable to a child between five and eight years old."

Watching Subject No. 1's behavior, a researcher at the side immediately picked up a file and began recording in a low voice.

"Try communicating with him. Let's see whether contact is possible."

After observing for a while, Samuel turned to the assistant beside him and gave the order.

"Thompson?"

The assistant nodded, then operated the microphone and spoke into it.

"!"

Originally, Subject No. 1 had still been looking around in confusion. But when he heard that familiar yet unfamiliar name, his entire body suddenly stiffened. Then he lifted his head and looked toward the speaker mounted above him.

"Doctor, it looks like communication may still be possible. Should we continue?"

After seeing the subject's reaction, the assistant could not help feeling excited and immediately asked Samuel.

"Continue!"

After coldly giving the order, Samuel fell silent, and the assistant immediately continued.

"You..."

But before he could even say a second word, Subject No. 1 inside the isolation chamber suddenly took a long stride and leaped upward toward the ceiling speaker.

With a loud bang, the speaker housing exploded in a small burst under the subject's strike.

This time, everyone in the room clearly felt the lab tremble.

Fortunately, although the impact was huge, every level of the underground laboratory had been built from ultra-durable materials. So aside from the exposed speaker itself, nothing else had been damaged.

In fact, because he had used too much force, when Subject No. 1 landed again, it was obvious that even he seemed a little dizzy from the rebound of his own attack.

"Doctor, it seems he doesn't want to communicate with us."

Seeing that, the assistant spoke up.

"No. Continue."

But this time, Samuel only gave a mysterious smile and repeated his order.

"Hello. Can you hear me?"

Although he did not understand why the doctor wanted to keep wasting effort, the assistant obediently continued speaking through the microphone.

This time, however, something happened that surprised everyone.

A backup speaker in another part of the chamber suddenly came on. Subject No. 1 instinctively became angry again and wanted to smash it too.

But when he saw that it was exactly the same kind of object as the one he had just destroyed, he tilted his head and hesitated.

The giant fist he had clenched relaxed again.

It was as if he could not understand why the thing he had clearly smashed to pieces had suddenly reappeared somewhere else completely intact.

His little mind was now full of enormous confusion.

But the violent rebound from that first strike was still deeply imprinted in his body.

And that prevented him from making any rash move this time.

"Doctor!!"

The people outside were instantly thrilled when they saw that.

This was the first test subject who had heard their voices without immediately flying into a rage.

That meant he could think.

He had some degree of intelligence.

And once that was true, it meant he could potentially be developed into a controllable bio-weapon.

"Continue. Drop a knife in there and see what he does."

As the lead scientist in charge of the experiment, Samuel was naturally just as excited as everyone else, but he still forcefully suppressed that excitement and spoke calmly.

He knew this was only the beginning.

After hearing Samuel's command, the assistant nodded eagerly. Then, after several quick operations on the main console, a hatch suddenly opened above Subject No. 1.

The subject had only just looked up when, before he could react, a massive chopping blade nearly two meters long fell straight down and landed at his feet.

The sudden movement visibly startled him.

Immediately, his expression turned savage, and he became feral again, warily scanning the surroundings as he prepared to tear apart whatever enemy had caused the disturbance.
