Chapter 18 — A terrifying secret

Von-Ra had made his choice. While Koryn immediately gravitated toward the army, seeing battle as a stage to prove himself, Von-Ra had quietly withdrawn to the science wing of the Academy. His golden eyes scanned the planetary simulations with meticulous care, each reading from Krypton's core fueling a growing unease. Something was wrong. Not minor fluctuations, not expected geological variances—something fundamental and catastrophic.

Day after day, he dove into calculations, simulations, and experimental models. His mind raced, analyzing every possible variable, every historical record of planetary behavior, and every obscure anomaly previously dismissed as "insignificant." Yet the deeper he delved, the more he realized the truth was larger, darker, and more immediate than he had feared.

And then came the day he was caught.

"Von-Ra! What are you doing?" Zor-El's voice boomed from the doorway, carrying both authority and frustration. His normally calm expression was drawn tight with worry.

Von-Ra looked up, startled but unafraid. "Father… I found something. The planetary core… it's unstable. The readings are worsening. We can't wait—"

then he pause, seeing his father's not changing face when he is informing about the terrifying secrets he discover.

"Do you know it, father?" Von-Ra's voice rose, trembling with a mix of anger and desperation. "How long… HOW LONG has this been happening?!"

Zor-El ran a hand through his silver hair, his own eyes shadowed with guilt. "Decades ago… before you were born."

"But why?!" Von-Ra's hands clenched into fists. "Why are you not doing anything? Why not inform the council? Why not solve the problem before it's too late?!"

Zor-El's face hardened. "Son… that is exactly the problem. The council. They do not want this information known. The last time my father—your grandfather—tried, they silenced him. They confiscated his work, his findings, and claimed his achievements as their own. They will not allow knowledge to circulate, even if Krypton itself is at risk."

Von-Ra's chest heaved, his voice raw. "And are we just going to let that happen? Krypton is dying! Do you understand what that means? Everything we've built, every legacy, every achievement of our people—thousands of years… it will all cease under our watch! Kara is still young… and I won't let it happen!"

Without waiting for a reply, he bolted past his father, running toward the highest balcony in the science council. The wind whipped against his black hair, and the view of Krypton's gleaming spires and bustling cities stretched endlessly before him. Von-Ra's mind raced—strategies, contingencies, alliances. Every thought collided with moral dilemmas, the weight of his family's legacy, and the fear of failing his world.

He closed his eyes, steadying his breath, but the anger and helplessness did not abate. The council will never act. They are blinded by their greed, their lust for influence. If Krypton is to survive, the responsibility falls to me. I may be branded a traitor, but I cannot stand idle.

Hours passed. When he finally returned home, the tension in his chest had eased, replaced by resolve. The sight of Kara Zor-El brought clarity. The young girl ran into his arms, her laughter bright and innocent, recounting her latest experiment with glowing pride.

"Von-Ra! Look what I made today! I combined the energy conduits, and it almost stabilized the micro-reactor! Isn't it amazing?" she exclaimed, eyes shining. kara-- now a 3 years old girl

Von-Ra held her close, letting her excitement wash over him. Her innocence, her untainted hope, was a reminder of what he must protect. His jaw tightened, determination settling deep in his bones.

Even if the council branded him a traitor.

Even if all of Krypton turned against him.

Even if he became the enemy of his people.

He would not allow Krypton to die.

Von-Ra pulled back, looking into Kara's eager eyes. "You're going to grow up strong, little sister. And I promise… I will find a way to protect you and our world. No matter the cost."

The night deepened outside, and the city's lights shimmered against the horizon. Von-Ra's resolve was unwavering. The council's schemes, the secrets of the past, and even the complacency of those in power would not deter him. He would act. He would change the outcome of Krypton's fate—even if it meant standing alone.

And for the first time, Von-Ra truly understood the weight of the path he had chosen.

The real challenge had begun—and Krypton's fate rested in the hands of one boy who refused to be constrained by legacy, politics, or fear.
