Cherreads

Chapter 6 - [Chapter 6: The Screaming Dark]

Xander found himself swamped, the weight of countless wings pressing down on him, causing him to crash to the cold, damp ground. The once-helpful beacon of his electric baton had switched modes, replacing the steady illumination with a maddening buzzing sound.

Each zap from the baton accompanied by the high-pitched shrieks of the bats and terrified screams of those around him. Darkness enveloped the area, and the distinction between up and down, left and right, became meaningless.

His lungs screamed for air, but every breath was a battle. "I can't... breathe!" Xander choked out, his voice barely audible amidst the chaos. As if things couldn't get worse, in the midst of his struggles, the flapping wings of a bat found its way directly into his mouth. He tasted the dusty fur and felt the frantic heartbeat of the tiny creature. Panic rose as he spat it out, smacking it away with his hand.

"Bleghh!! W-what the fuck!" Xander instinctively blurted out.

The combination of disgust, fear, and the sheer need for oxygen was making his mind reel.

Refocusing, Xander quickly realized he had to align himself with the direction of the swarm to avoid another mouthful of bat and to allow himself easier access to the precious air. Using what little strength he had, he oriented his body with the flow of the frantic creatures.

As his breathing gradually evened out, Xander's ears began to differentiate the sounds around him. Amidst the symphony of flapping and zapping, he discerned the distinct noise of gunfire and the familiar sound of a baseball bat connecting with... something. Though the noise was jarring, it brought a modicum of relief. "That must be Mika and Jasper" Xander thought, finding a shred of hope amidst the onslaught.

Gasping, the air thick with the scent of fear and panic, Xander's ears picked up a familiar voice. "Z! Get up! Where are you?" Mikael's voice pierced the cacophony of the cave, acting like a lifeline for Xander.

Shaking off the disorientation, Xander's eyes trailed the source of the incessant buzzing. There, just within arm's reach, lay his baton. Pushing himself up with newfound strength, he crawled towards it, his fingers finally curling around its familiar grip. Rising, he swung the baton overhead, the electric current zapping several bats that dared to fly too close. In a swift move, he toggled the flashlight mode, piercing the darkness.

A harrowing sight greeted him. Cecilia, the middle-aged woman who seemed so unassuming before, was flailing wildly with a massive kitchen knife. In her panic, the blade connected with Eliza's back, causing blood to spurt out, an enticing scent for the bats. Xander's face twisted in horror as the swarm, attracted by the fresh blood, descended upon Eliza, muffling her agonized screams under their combined weight.

The scene was stomach-churning, with Tony and Rico desperately trying to fend off the bats, but their attempts seemed futile.

Through the chaotic swarm and the beam of Xander's flashlight, Layla's voice, thick with horror and disbelief, shouted, "What the fuck have you done?!" Cecilia stood frozen, her eyes wide, the weight of her actions sinking in.

And then, as if out of nowhere, in the midst of all the confusion, Alfred lunged towards Xander, snatching the baton from his hand. " No! Wait! What are you doing?!" Xander yelled out to Alfred, considering what the ramifications of his actions would be.

"Now's our chance, while they're distracted!" he yelled, his voice hoarse. Setting the baton to its maximum voltage, he charged towards the bats that had congregated around Eliza. But in his haste and desperation, he didn't spare a thought for the girl beneath. A powerful jolt surged through, electrocuting the bats and, tragically, Eliza herself.

The silence that settled was eerily thick. The once fluttering wings and shrieks were now replaced by the sizzling sounds of charred bat bodies. The beam of the baton eerily unveiled the grim aftermath - Eliza. Or at least, what was left of her.

Her form, once lively, was now a nightmarish mosaic of gore and burnt flesh. You could see patches where the bats had ripped away at her, seemingly frenzied by the fresh wound on her back, inflicted inadvertently by Cecilia.

The brutal truth was apparent: the bats hadn't just feasted on her; they'd burrowed, seeking the warmth of living flesh, tunneling through to exit from any possible orifice.

The grotesqueness of the scene was too much for even the bravest of them.

At this time, Xander felt the contents of his stomach rise. He retched, barely able to turn away in time. Nearby, Cecilia, who inadvertently contributed to the tragedy, vomited uncontrollably, overwhelmed by guilt and revulsion. Rico's and Jasper's reactions weren't any different; they too succumbed to their visceral repulsion, expelling their distress physically.

The grim reality of their situation was now undeniably clear: the Nexus portal wasn't just another adventurous endeavor. It was a gruesome trial of life and death, even a rank 0 portal was no child's play. The group had witnessed the consequences firsthand, and the weight of that realization was heavy upon their souls.

In the stillness that followed the gruesome sight, the air was thick with both dread and determination. Mikael approached Xander, who was visibly shaken by the horrors they'd encountered.

"Z, you good?" Mikael's voice was as calm as it could be in the circumstances. "We can't lose ourselves now. We have to keep moving. This isn't what we expected, but if we let fear take over, none of us will make it out."

Xander tried to swallow his fear, and with a nod, replied, "Yeah... yeah, you're right."

The conversation among the group continued, highlighting their concerns. "Has anyone seen those damn thugs?" Tony asked, his voice edged with frustration.

Layla, glancing around, responded, "Last I saw, they bolted the other way. With all that chaos, who knows where they ended up?"

Jasper, ever pragmatic, urged, "Whatever they're up to, we need to keep moving. The bats are dispersed for now, but there's no guarantee they won't regroup."

Tony's face reddened as he spotted the kitchen knife in Cecilia's trembling hand. In a swift move, he snatched it away, tossing it aside with disdain. "Think twice before swinging that around," he admonished.

Cecilia's voice trembled as she tried to respond, but words failed her.

Layla chimed in, her tone incredulous. "This is madness. A rank 0 dungeon isn't supposed to be this intense! What did we get ourselves into?"

"Complaining won't get us out," Mikael pointed out as he gestured for the group to move forward. "Stay close, and keep alert."

Alfred handed the baton back to Xander as they moved through the tunnel. The young man's voice was firm, tinged with a mix of gratitude and reprimand. "Don't pull that stunt again."

Alfred merely nodded, realizing the necessity of his actions didn't make them any less controversial. As they continued, Xander thought aloud, refining his strategy. "These bats... They're drawn to blood. The fresh scent seems to attract them. We have to be extra careful not to get wounded."

With the guidance provided and a new plan in mind, the group pressed on, more vigilant than before.

As Xander led the way with the flickering light emanating from his baton, he couldn't help but notice the decreasing battery indicator. 'That damned Alfred,' he thought, frustration bubbling up. 'Used up more than a bar's worth of energy on those bats. At this rate, I might as well save the rest in case things get really dire.'

His grip tightened around the baton. The very source of their security was waning, and they didn't have a backup. With each step, the weight of responsibility pressed heavier on Xander.

Jasper, alongside him, kept his trusty bat at the ready, taking swings at any bat daring enough to approach them. Tony, Rico, and the others remained vigilant, the still-fresh horror of Eliza's fate reminding them of the consequences of letting their guard down.

After what felt like an eternity of walking, the tunnel gradually widened, revealing a more spacious cavern ahead. The group stepped cautiously into the newfound space, letting the baton's light scan the expanse.

The vast area branched off into two distinct paths.

To the left, a slightly wider tunnel seemed to slope gently downwards, echoing with distant droplets of water. To the right, the pathway narrowed, but the air emanating from it felt slightly warmer, perhaps hinting at a different environment beyond.

The group exchanged anxious glances. Which way to go?

"Alright, so what's it gonna be, folks? Left or right?" Tony's voice pierced the tense atmosphere, forcing everyone to confront the choice before them.

"I say we go right," Jasper suggested, wiping some sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand. "The air feels warmer there; maybe we'll find a way out or something."

"I agree with Jasper. The right path it is, then," said Mikael, his eyes darting between the two pathways as if expecting some hint to emerge.

"Right path it is," Xander confirmed, feeling the collective tension ease a notch.

The group shifted gears, moving cautiously but decisively into the narrow tunnel on the right.

As they progressed, the atmosphere became increasingly warmer and humid. Beads of sweat trickled down everyone's faces, making the journey more uncomfortable. The cave walls seemed to close in on them, adorned with peculiar glowing fungi that painted eerie shadows along the way.

"Hey, Mika, how much ammo do you have left?" Xander whispered, aware that resources were a crucial factor in their survival.

"Down to one magazine. About twelve bullets," Mikael responded, his voice tinged with concern.

"I've got a pistol too, you know," Tony interjected, swaggering a bit. "Didn't want to waste bullets on bats in the dark and risk hitting one of us. Ain't that right, Cecilia?

"

The atmosphere tensed up instantly. Alfred broke the silence, "Now's not the time—"

"You have no right to speak," Mikael cut him off sharply, "not after you played a part in killing someone."

"For real, man," Jasper chimed in, swinging his bat in a slow arc. "You and the old lady double-teamed poor Eliza. What gives?"

Cecilia's eyes welled up with tears, her face contorting with a blend of remorse and anger. But before she could retort, her words drowned in the collective gasp that emerged from the group.

The pathway had started to widen, and up ahead, the darkness began to yield to a soft, reddish glow. For a moment, everyone's focus shifted from the tension among them to the new mystery that lay ahead.

"What is that?" Layla whispered, her voice tinged with both awe and fear.

"Whatever it is, we finally have another source of light, so I'm putting away the baton to save some battery," Xander announced, pocketing the device. "But given what we've seen, maybe we should decide on roles and formations before going any further. I've got a bad feeling about what's ahead."

"You're right," Layla agreed, her hand gripping the hilt of a concealed dagger. "I can join Jasper up front, maybe handle any close combat that comes our way."

"I've got a gun and a knife," Tony said, patting his jacket where the items were stashed. "I can be flexible, wherever you guys think I'm needed."

Rico hefted his wooden staff, giving it a twirl. "This staff can knock some skulls, but I can also keep an eye on the rear."

Vinny cracked his knuckles, showcasing his brass knuckles. "I'm good for a scrap. Put me up front, and we'll see who gets the last laugh."

"I don't have anything," Alfred mumbled, and the group's eyes narrowed collectively, shifting towards him with a mix of suspicion and incredulity.

"You came in here empty-handed?" Xander's voice edged toward exasperation.

"I find that hard to believe," Mikael added, his eyebrows knitted in skepticism.

"Yeah, especially after that stun gun move on Eliza," Tony remarked.

"You know damn well she wasn't making it out of that swarm alive," Alfred retorted, his eyes fixed on Cecilia. "I just did what needed to be done. And if anything, blame her for cutting the girl in the first place."

"Who let you two geezers in here anyway?" Jasper interrupted, a smirk on his face. "Isn't there like an age limit or something?"

Laughter diffused some of the tension, except for Alfred and Cecilia, who wore faces of stone.

"Young people have no respect these days," Alfred muttered, shaking his head.

"Okay, so here's what we'll do," Xander took charge. "Up front, it'll be me, Jasper, Vinny, and Layla. Mikael and Tony, you're with Rico in the middle. Alfred and Cecilia, you guys are in the back."

The formation decided, they moved forward, each step tinged with an uneasiness they couldn't shake off. As they progressed, the glow intensified, revealing the source: strange red plants that covered the cave walls and floor. They looked like a mix of oversized fungi and coral, their luminescent bulbs pulsating as if alive.

The eerie red glow intensified as they walked, now so luminous that it began to border on unsettling. "What the fuck is this place?" Tony murmured, his eyes darting nervously from one glowing plant to the next.

"I was expecting a forest, maybe some wolves to fight, based on what people told me about their initiation portals," Rico chimed in, his staff occasionally nudging a stray vine or two.

Just then, Xander tripped, sprawling forward. "Guys, be careful. There are some spiky vines ahead," he warned, accepting Jasper's outstretched hand to pull himself up.

"How are we supposed to navigate through this mess?" Mikael grumbled, clearly frustrated.

Before anyone could answer, a shout came from the rear of the group. "Watch out!"

Alfred's voice sliced through the air, followed by a scream. Everyone spun around, eyes widening at the sight before them: a lizard-like creature, the size of a large dog, its body a dark black mottled with vivid orange spots. With a guttural hiss, the creature spewed a stream of liquid directly at Cecilia.

Her shriek rent the air, a sound so filled with agony it made everyone's skin crawl. The liquid—an acid of some sort—had landed on her legs, vaporizing the flesh on her right leg in an instant.

In the immediate aftermath of this assault, everyone but Alfred retaliated with a surge of desperate violence.

Tony's pistol barked six times, the bullets whizzing through the dank air, but only two found their mark on the salamander. Rico brandished his staff like a man possessed, each strike landing with a satisfying thud.

Mikael's gun added to the symphony of firepower, three rounds hitting the creature.

"It's bolting!" Jasper hollered, his eyes tracking the wounded salamander as it scampered up the vine-infested wall.

Vinny lunged after it, and just as he neared, another salamander pounced, latching onto his face. "W-What the hell is on my face?!" Vinny screamed in a frenzied panic.

A chilling hiss filled the air, accompanied by the sight of rising vapor. Then, silence. Vinny's body went limp, falling to the ground. When the salamander retreated, what remained was an abomination—Vinny's face had melted and burned into an unrecognizable mess of flesh and bone.

A gut-wrenching scream escaped Layla's lips. Tony and Rico howled, their voices tinged with a terrible blend of disbelief and grief.

"Damn it all!" Fueled by horror and adrenaline, Xander yelled, charging at the new salamander, his electric baton humming ominously. Jasper was hot on his heels too, his spiked bat poised for a kill.

"Z, watch the acid!" Mikael's warning rang out, sharp and clear.

Tony's pistol cracked again, aiming for the new salamander. But he and Mikael had to cease fire as Xander and Jasper were now too close to the creature for a clean shot.

"Target the other one!" Alfred's voice was fraught with urgency. But the first salamander had vanished, as if swallowed by the shadows, leaving behind a group mired in confusion.

The dread that hung in the air was as thick as the noxious fumes rising from Vinny's dissolving face…
