After the presentation ended, Zoe Rhodes instinctively tried to slip away, but Alan blocked her path.
"Miss Rhodes, long time no see."

Kiara Sutton glanced from Alan to her, her eyes asking what was going on.
"Uh, long time no see." Zoe Rhodes forced a polite smile. "Sorry, my friend and I have somewhere to be, so we'll be going."
"Miss Rhodes, please wait." Alan stopped her, saying quickly, "I'm so sorry to bother you, but Mr. Bennett would like to invite you to lunch. He'd also like to discuss Assistant Sullivan's situation."
"..."
Zoe Rhodes stopped in her tracks. She frowned and asked, "Hasn't she already resigned?"
"Yes, but her resignation hasn't been formally approved yet."
"Why? It's been a while, hasn't it?"
"If everything had gone as planned, the process should have been completed the day before yesterday. But..."
The pause hung in the air, heavy with implication.
Zoe Rhodes's heart sank.
