Chapter 5 - The Night That Changed Everything

The room they gave me wasn't a prison.

It was worse.

It was comfortable.

Too comfortable.

A large bed. Clean sheets. A window overlooking the inner courtyard. Even a fireplace, already lit, casting soft shadows across the walls.

A cage disguised as luxury.

I stood in the center of the room, unmoving.

Listening.

Two guards outside.

Heavy footsteps.

Alert.

Watching.

Of course.

I walked slowly toward the window.

The night had fallen completely now.

The moon was still high.

Still watching.

Always watching.

My fingers brushed the glass.

Cold.

Still.

Silent.

"You're not thinking of escaping, are you?"

The voice.

Closer now.

Clearer.

Almost… intimate.

I exhaled slowly.

"I don't even know what I am."

A pause.

Then—

A soft chuckle.

"That's the problem."

My jaw tightened.

"Then tell me."

Silence.

Deliberate.

Cruel.

"Not yet."

Of course.

Of course not.

My reflection stared back at me in the glass.

But it didn't look like me.

Not completely.

My eyes—

They weren't the same.

Darker.

Sharper.

Alive in a way they had never been before.

The mark pulsed again.

Slow.

Controlled.

Waiting.

"For something…" I whispered.

"For him," the voice answered.

My breath hitched.

No.

No, that didn't make sense.

"I don't need him."

Another laugh.

Low.

Knowing.

"That's what makes this interesting."

A knock at the door cut through the moment.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Authoritative.

My body reacted before my mind did.

Tension.

Alert.

Ready.

"Enter."

The word slipped out instinctively.

The door opened.

And he walked in.

Kael.

Of course.

He didn't wait.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't ask.

He never did.

The guards stepped aside instantly.

The door closed behind him.

And just like that—

The room felt smaller.

Tighter.

Dangerous.

"You adapt quickly," he said.

His eyes scanned the room briefly.

Then landed on me.

Locked.

Focused.

"You don't."

I didn't mean to say it.

But I didn't regret it either.

A flicker crossed his face.

Gone in a second.

He stepped closer.

Slow.

Controlled.

Always controlled.

"You're not afraid of me."

Again.

Not a question.

A statement.

I held his gaze.

"I was."

A pause.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Was?"

I stepped closer.

Matching him.

Not backing down.

"Now I'm not sure what you are to me."

That—

That shifted something.

Subtle.

But real.

The air changed.

Charged.

"You should be careful with your words," he said quietly.

"Why?" I tilted my head. "Afraid I'll mean them?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

He moved.

Fast.

But not violent.

Not this time.

His hand reached out—

and stopped just before touching my neck.

The mark.

He was watching it.

Studying it.

Like it might reveal something.

Like it might betray me.

"Every time I get close…" he murmured.

"It reacts."

I didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't even blink.

"Maybe it doesn't like you," I said.

His lips almost curved.

Almost.

"Or maybe…"

His fingers brushed my skin.

Light.

Barely there.

And the reaction—

Was immediate.

The mark flared.

Bright.

Burning.

But this time—

It didn't hurt.

It pulled.

My breath hitched.

My body leaned—

Closer.

Without permission.

Without control.

His eyes darkened.

He felt it too.

That pull.

That connection.

That wrongness.

"This shouldn't be happening," he said.

Low.

Rough.

"It is," I whispered.

The space between us disappeared.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough to feel him.

To feel the heat.

To feel the tension.

To feel something that had nothing to do with power.

And everything to do with danger.

My heart pounded.

But it wasn't fear.

Not anymore.

"Step back," he said suddenly.

The command hit.

Hard.

My body froze.

For a split second—

It obeyed.

But then—

The mark burned.

Stronger.

Defiant.

And I didn't move.

Kael noticed.

Of course he did.

His jaw tightened.

"You resist me again."

There it was.

That edge.

That frustration.

Good.

"You don't control me."

The words came out steady.

Certain.

His hand dropped.

Slowly.

But his gaze—

It didn't leave mine.

"Everything in this place belongs to me."

His voice lowered.

Dangerous again.

"And yet…" I said softly.

"I'm still standing."

Silence.

Again.

But this time—

It wasn't tension.

It was something else.

Something deeper.

Something building.

"You're changing," he said.

Not accusing.

Observing.

"Maybe I was always like this."

That made him pause.

Just for a second.

Enough.

"Impossible."

I smiled slightly.

"Then explain me."

He couldn't.

And we both knew it.

That was the problem.

That was the danger.

Because things he couldn't control—

Didn't last long.

"I'll find out," he said.

Not a threat.

A promise.

"I know you will."

Another step.

Closer.

Too close again.

"You won't like the answer."

His eyes flickered.

Interest.

Again.

Always that.

"Try me."

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

And this time—

He didn't pull back.

He leaned in.

Closer.

My breath caught.

The tension snapped.

And for one second—

One dangerous, irreversible second—

I thought he was going to kiss me.

The thought alone sent a shock through my body.

Wrong.

So wrong.

But I didn't move.

Didn't stop him.

Didn't want to.

His breath brushed against my lips.

Warm.

Close.

Too close—

And then—

Pain.

Sharp.

Violent.

Explosive.

I gasped, my body jerking back.

The mark burned like fire.

No—

Like something tearing through me.

My knees gave out.

I dropped.

The room spun.

"What—"

The voice—

Louder now.

Clearer.

Stronger than ever.

"It's starting."

My vision blurred.

"No… not now…"

But it didn't stop.

It got worse.

Much worse.

My body arched.

A scream tore out of me.

Raw.

Uncontrolled.

Kael was in front of me instantly.

"What's happening?!"

His voice—

Not calm anymore.

Not controlled.

Real.

I grabbed his arm.

Hard.

Desperate.

And the moment I did—

Everything exploded.

The mark flared.

Blinding.

The room shook.

Power surged out of me—

Not like before.

Bigger.

Stronger.

Unstable.

The walls cracked.

The fire went out.

The windows shattered.

And for a brief—

terrifying—

moment…

Everything went dark.

Silence.

Heavy.

Endless.

And then—

My eyes opened.

But they weren't mine.

Not completely.

The world looked different.

Sharper.

Clearer.

Alive.

And Kael—

He was staring at me.

Frozen.

Not in control.

Not dominant.

Not above me.

No.

For the first time—

He looked like he didn't know what to do.

"What… did you become…?" he whispered.

I tilted my head slowly.

And when I spoke—

The voice wasn't just mine.

It was both.

Cold.

Ancient.

Powerful.

"Something you can't control."

Silence.

Absolute.

And in that silence—

Something shifted.

Not just in me.

In him.

Because now—

This wasn't a game anymore.

This wasn't curiosity.

This wasn't control.

This was danger.

Real danger.

And he knew it.
