Chapter 2 - The contract

"But I know for sure that he is up to no good. Please, my love, for your own sake, just try to keep your cool. But why does he want you to leave home by 5:00 AM for an office that doesn't open until 8:00 AM, when it's only a thirty-minute walk?"

"So my love, let's just forget about that. The man is definitely up to no good, but don't worry, I'll be careful enough," Anita replied.

"Yeah, sure. I trust you. See you during break. I love you."

Anita smiled and let go of his hand. "I love you too."

As soon as Sabastine left the office, Blana—the CEO's personal secretary—walked in. She went straight to Anita without wasting any time.

"The CEO sent for you. Bring the contract documents and your own personal notes."

"Okay. Thanks. After you," Anita said, preparing to leave.

"Wait, there is something I would like to discuss with you after break. Be expecting me in my office."

Anita wandered off, her mind racing. "Yeah... sure," she murmured absently. She couldn't stop wondering what it was that made a man who claimed to want her yet despise her so much. She was so lost in thought that she walked straight into Edward's office without even noticing he was there.

"Now why are you just reporting back now?" he demanded.

She didn't answer, still trapped in her own world.

"Am I talking to you, Anita?" he shouted.

Anita jumped, suddenly realizing where she was. "I am sorry, Sir. Were you saying something?"

"Yes, I was. Why are you just reporting back now?"

"I was working on it, Sir. Here it is." She handed him the file, clutching her own notes tightly in her other hand.

"What's this other one for?" he asked, pointing to her hand.

"It's my own ideas regarding the contract, Sir."

"So you weren't supposed to give this to me as well?"

"Here, take it, Sir," she said, offering it to him.

"I didn't tell you to leave yet. Sit down while I check these files."

Anita ignored him and sat down without saying a word.

After reading through them, Edward looked up, clearly impressed. "Wow. This is incredible. I mean, your ideas are absolutely brilliant! We are definitely going to work with this. This means you and I will be going forward with it. The event is in three days' time, but don't announce it today. Is that clear?"

"Yes, Sir. Besides, I don't really have a choice anyway."

"Yes, you certainly don't. You may go now."

"Thank you, Sir." She left his office.

During the break, Blana was waiting for Anita in her office, while Sabastine and his friends were also waiting for her to go for lunch together.

Anita entered Blana's office. "Please get straight to the point, because I don't have much time."

"Well, I noticed something about Mr. Edward," Blana began.

"Is that so? If this is one of your silly games, you had better stop it right now."

"No, my dear Anita. That man is in love with you! And I also found out that Sabastine is married... with two kids! You can't marry him, Anita. You don't want to be a second wife, do you?"

"You are insane, Blana!" Anita snapped. "And if you think you've won something, you're nothing but a big failure. Excuse me." She hissed angrily and walked out.

She couldn't stop thinking about what she had just heard. She decided not to go to Sabastine yet and headed back to her office, only to find him waiting there, looking so innocent.

"My love, let's go have lunch together," he smiled.

Anita felt terrible and shocked, but she didn't know what to do yet. She didn't want to confront him until she found out the truth for sure. So she forced a smile. "Yeah, sure. Let's go."

"Sorry I kept you waiting."

"No problem at all. Let's go.
