Chapter 12 - Don’t Let Go of My Hand

The air felt different after Shen Yichen spoke.

Not lighter.

Not heavier.

Just… decided.

"Then let it be."

Lin Yue stood still, her hand still held in his.

Not tightly.

But firmly enough that it was clear—he didn't plan to let go unless she made him.

Lu Han's expression hardened immediately.

"This is where it starts going wrong," he said.

Shen Yichen didn't even look at him.

His focus stayed on Lin Yue.

Completely.

Like everything else had already lost priority.

Lin Yue finally spoke quietly.

"You're not thinking clearly."

Shen Yichen answered instantly.

"I am."

A pause.

Then softer:

"For the first time in a long time."

That line made Lin Yue go silent for a moment.

Because there was no hesitation in it.

No doubt.

Only certainty built on fragments and instinct.

She tried to pull her hand back slightly.

Not forcefully.

Just testing.

Shen Yichen's fingers tightened immediately.

Not painful.

But immediate.

Reaction before thought.

His eyes darkened a fraction.

"…Don't."

One word.

Not command.

Fear.

Lin Yue stopped.

That reaction shouldn't have mattered.

But it did.

Because it wasn't control.

It was panic disguised as restraint.

Lu Han stepped forward again.

"You're confusing attachment with truth," he said sharply.

Shen Yichen finally looked at him.

Slowly.

Coldly.

"I don't care what you call it."

A pause.

"I care what she is."

Lin Yue felt her breath tighten slightly.

That was the problem.

He wasn't building memory.

He was building meaning around her.

And meaning was harder to erase than memory.

Shen Yichen turned back to her.

His grip softened slightly.

But didn't release.

"Come with me," he said quietly.

Lin Yue blinked slightly.

"Where?"

His gaze didn't waver.

"Anywhere I can see you."

Silence.

That answer wasn't logical.

It wasn't practical.

It was instinct refusing separation.

Lu Han exhaled sharply.

"You're isolating her," he said.

Shen Yichen finally responded without looking away from Lin Yue.

"I'm protecting her."

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"From what?"

Shen Yichen didn't answer immediately.

His eyes darkened slightly.

Then quietly:

"From losing her again."

That sentence landed heavier than the rest.

Because it wasn't about danger outside.

It was about fear inside him.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"You don't even know what you lost," she said softly.

Shen Yichen stepped closer again.

Now there was barely any space left.

His voice dropped.

"Then I'll stop losing what I find."

A pause.

His thumb brushed lightly over her knuckles.

Almost absent.

Almost instinctive.

"But I'm not letting you go."

Silence.

Lu Han's expression tightened.

"This isn't love," he said again.

Shen Yichen finally turned his head slightly.

"Then don't call it that."

A beat.

"I don't need a name for it."

Lin Yue looked at him for a long moment.

Then quietly:

"You're holding onto me like I'm the only proof you exist."

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

Instead—

he nodded once.

"Maybe I am."

That honesty made the air shift again.

Because it wasn't romantic anymore.

It was dependency forming at full speed.

Lin Yue's hand was still in his.

But now she could feel it clearly.

He wasn't just holding her.

He was anchoring himself through her.

Lu Han stepped forward again, voice sharper now.

"If you keep going like this, you'll lose yourself completely."

Shen Yichen's response was immediate.

"Then I'll lose myself with her."

Silence dropped again.

This time heavier than before.

Because there was no hesitation in it.

No fear of consequences.

Only certainty that she mattered more than everything else.

Shen Yichen looked at Lin Yue again.

And softer, almost quiet:

"Just don't leave my hand."

A pause.

"Not this time."

And Lin Yue realized—

this wasn't a man trying to remember her anymore.

This was a man who had already decided she was the only thing worth remembering.
