Chapter 88 - Chapter 87: Kahn’s New Friends

Defeating Jeong Jeong had consequences far deeper than anything visible on the surface.

Even after the public uproar died down, the impact continued to ripple quietly in the shadows.

For Kahn, the greatest benefit was Fire Lord Ozai's gradually relaxing vigilance.

With fewer restrictions placed on him, Kahn finally had the time and freedom to put his plan of traveling to the Eastern Air Temple back on the agenda.

But the plan was far from simple.

First, although Ozai's surveillance had loosened, he would never allow Kahn to leave the capital alone. Kahn would have to sneak out in secret.

Second—and far more troublesome—was the question of how to actually get there.

The Eastern Air Temple, once home to the Air Nomads, had been abandoned for a hundred years since the Fire Nation's genocide.

Most people now avoided the place entirely.

Although the name suggested it lay in the east, the temple's actual position was west of the Fire Nation and east of the Earth Kingdom, separated from the Fire Nation by a massive stretch of sea.

Traveling by land would mean crossing half the world—utterly unrealistic.

Traveling by sea was the only option.

Hiring a merchant ship could get him across, but it would cost a fortune and would be extremely risky. Someone would eventually notice his disappearance.

Worse still, learning Spiritbending clearly wasn't something one could master in a few days or weeks.

Kahn couldn't disappear long enough for Ozai to become suspicious.

Which meant—if he wanted to learn Spiritbending—he needed a method that allowed him to travel back and forth quickly, repeatedly, and without leaving a trace.

It was, to put it mildly… impossible.

Kahn soon realized that the mental obstacles in Spiritbending weren't nearly as terrifying as the logistical ones. For now, he had no solution.

During this period, he and Azula continued to receive missions from Ozai—again focused on hunting rebels.

It seemed Ozai intended to make this their regular assignment.

Kahn and Azula couldn't be happier. The missions suited them perfectly.

However, unlike the first two operations, these later missions went smoothly, with no particular surprises.

But Azula, thrilled by their continued success, bragged about them to Mai and Ty Lee after every mission.

The two girls, suffocated by their quiet, proper lives of etiquette and school rules, grew increasingly restless.

Then Azula revealed her true intention.

"Actually," she said casually, "as my good sisters, I hope the three of us can do something fun together. You wouldn't mind helping me, right?"

The two exchanged a glance, hesitated for only a moment, and then agreed with excitement.

"Of course!"

"It's not like staying home is exciting."

If this had been the old Azula, they would have fled instantly.

But the current Azula—sharp, proud, but not cruel toward them—no longer frightened them.

As long as Azula wasn't targeting them, she was tolerable.

And so, Azula's little team gained two formidable new members.

Despite not being benders, both Mai and Ty Lee were far stronger than ordinary people.

Ty Lee's Chi Blocking was terrifyingly effective, and Mai's knife throwing was deadly. Many benders couldn't even react before being taken down.

Because they had grown up together, their teamwork was seamless.

Under Azula's command, the four completed their first mission together with flawless coordination—much to Azula's satisfaction.

More importantly, neither Mai nor Ty Lee were idiots. That alone was rare.

However, despite their rebellious streak, they were still bound by their families and the expectations of high society.

If Azula wanted them to join her and Kahn's plan to overthrow Ozai, she needed a powerful reason—one they couldn't ignore.

Which meant everything still came down to finding Ursa.

To find Ursa, they needed to locate the spirit Mother of Faces.

To find the Mother of Faces, Kahn needed deeper Spiritbending.

To learn Spiritbending, he had to travel back and forth to the Eastern Air Temple efficiently and secretly.

And they still had no solution for the travel problem.

Kahn even considered asking Iroh to invite Guru Pathik into the Spirit World so Kahn could train there directly. That would eliminate all difficulties.

But just as Iroh predicted—they couldn't find the Guru. His location was unknown, and Kahn's plan collapsed.

In frustration, Azula proposed the most Azula-like plan imaginable:

"If we can't find her, I'll just burn down the Mother of Faces' home to force her out. Once she appears, we can beat her down and make her tell us where Mother is!"

Kahn, horrified, refused immediately.

He didn't know the Mother of Faces' true strength, but he absolutely did not want to escalate things into some cosmic-level arson.

Fortunately, something hopeful finally happened.

Kahn made spirit friends.

Four of them, in fact.

…Or perhaps five.

"East, South, West, and North!"

The moment he entered the Spirit World, Kahn called out loudly.

His voice easily pierced through mountains, forests, illusions, and distance—reaching the beings he called.

In the Spirit World, the rules of the physical world were illusions. Only Spirit had true meaning.

And the longer Kahn stayed here, the more naturally he adapted to its laws. His Spirit manipulation here grew smoother every day.

Unfortunately, none of that skill carried back into the physical world. In reality, he was still a beginner who could only astral project.

Iroh wasn't much better.

Soon, four tiny black dots appeared on the horizon. They grew larger, revealing four identical, beautiful purplish-red bird-like spirits.

They weren't truly birds.

They had small antlers (they insisted they were "dragon horns"), fish-like fins at their cheeks, and extremely long tail feathers that had no purpose other than decoration.

But to Kahn—they were devastatingly cute.

Their bodies were fluffy and sparrow-sized, their feathers glowed purplish-red with faint pink highlights, and their dark, shiny eyes sparkled with intelligence.

Kahn fell instantly.

So. Damn. Cute.

"Kahn! You're here!"

"Long time no see!"

"Has it been long?"

"Feels long!"

"Did we see you yesterday?"

"We probably did."

"How long ago was yesterday?"

"Yesterday is yesterday!"

"Anyway! We've been waiting forever!"

The four spirits chirped nonstop, circling around him, radiant with joy.

With their energy surrounding him, Kahn couldn't help but laugh.

"Long time no see, everyone."
