"Nick, you're not going to put me in a difficult position, are you?"
Green Arrow's voice was low and steady as he stood beside the psychic transfer device. His gaze was like a sharp arrowhead, sweeping mercilessly across the faces of the S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel.
The expressions on the S.H.I.E.L.D. team immediately changed.
Even Spider-Man, the Ninja Turtles, and Daredevil could instantly sense the covert struggle between Batman and S.H.I.E.L.D.
The atmosphere in the building had been much lighter after dealing with the leftover Foot Clan.
Yet, the moment Green Arrow spoke, the air instantly thickened. The tension returned, rivaling that of the previous battle.
Some people felt their breaths constrict.
They imagined that their opponent might not be the leftover Foot Clan anymore, but the Justice League led by Batman. A wave of panic rose inside them, leaving them unable to calm down for a long while.
But Hawkeye remained composed.
He fixed his gaze on Green Arrow and said slowly, "The psychic transfer device cannot be handed over to you—I assume you know what I mean."
"You want to say that S.H.I.E.L.D. is safer than the Justice League?"
Green Arrow let out a derisive laugh. "Nick, you've probably been dealing with a headache these past few days, haven't you? With your paranoid tendencies, have you not realized the problem yet?"
Hawkeye's face darkened further.
"Even so, I cannot hand over the psychic transfer device to you."
He spoke bluntly, his voice firm: "This device is too dangerous. I cannot trust you."
"Trust or not isn't your call."
Green Arrow sneered. "After what just happened, all of New York—maybe all of America, perhaps the entire world—has seen the truth about Batman. And you? Who do you think you are?"
Who am I?
I was saving the world while you were still wearing your diaper playing in the mud!
Hawkeye's blood boiled at these words.
But just as he was about to explode, he forced the anger down, suppressing it from showing outwardly.
The verbal sparring between the two made the tension in the building almost tangible. Sparks seemed to flicker around them as their words collided.
A fight was imminent.
"Director!"
As the situation reached a stalemate, Hawkeye couldn't help but step forward, looking at Nick Fury with a clear intent.
Even if they couldn't take the psychic transfer device today, they couldn't just back down.
"Looking for a fight?"
The Green Arrow clone of Anton, seeing Hawkeye stepping up, immediately understood his intent. A faintly amused smirk spread across his face.
This clone's attitude toward S.H.I.E.L.D. was deliberately hostile.
Anton had crafted this to distinguish the perspectives of Batman, Steel, and Green Arrow within the Justice League, particularly toward S.H.I.E.L.D.
Even though Batman led the Justice League, there were always internal dynamics. This display subtly showed that even within the League, differences existed.
Batman, Steel, and Green Arrow—the three most mysterious members—were untouchable by S.H.I.E.L.D., their methods and intentions inscrutable.
Additionally, this deliberate hostility from the Green Arrow clone sent a warning to S.H.I.E.L.D. on behalf of the Justice League:
Even if S.H.I.E.L.D. formed the Avengers, they would never be on equal footing with the Justice League.
Just competitors?
Nick Fury was overthinking.
S.H.I.E.L.D., or the current Avengers, besides Tony Stark, were just small fry, inconsequential.
"Hmph!"
Hawkeye, with Fury's silent approval, understood immediately.
He drew his bow, aiming at Green Arrow.
Whoosh!
The arrow shot out.
It collided with an arrow from Green Arrow.
Point-counterpoint!
Thwack! Thwack!
The two arrows deflected into the walls on either side.
Neither had used a special arrow; both were ordinary.
This felt more like a sparring match than a death battle.
After all, the relationship between the Justice League and S.H.I.E.L.D. was delicate. Even if they couldn't be friends, they tried not to be enemies.
This was an unspoken consensus between Batman and Nick Fury.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Arrows continued to fly.
Those around instinctively hid, watching from the sidelines.
Green Arrow and Hawkeye's duel represented the contest of strength between the two factions.
Whoever won would gain authority.
And the psychic transfer device would belong to them.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Sweat formed on Hawkeye's back.
Arrows fired from Green Arrow relentlessly assaulted him.
The onslaught was like a rising tide, one wave after another, pressure mounting with each strike.
It was like that first night he met Green Arrow and lost.
The term "defeated subordinate" repeatedly flashed in his mind.
"Damn it!"
Hawkeye gritted his teeth. He knew if this continued, he might repeat the failure from that night. He decided to fight with everything he had.
He lunged at Green Arrow.
The arrows cut through the air.
He didn't dodge or evade.
In a flash, Hawkeye twisted his waist in a strange, agile maneuver, narrowly avoiding the arrow.
"Barton!"
S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel gasped, astonished.
They hadn't expected Hawkeye to treat this sparring as a life-or-death battle.
The clash between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Justice League was vividly displayed through their duel.
Even Spider-Man couldn't help but applaud Hawkeye's skill.
The Turtles, thick-skinned though they were, understood Hawkeye's abilities were formidable.
Spider-Man, stronger than Hawkeye in many ways, realized skill and experience far outweighed raw power.
Hawkeye, with his ordinary human body, had already surpassed 99% of humans, ranking among the elite one percent.
Green Arrow was the same.
Though Spider-Man had limited exposure to him, watching Hawkeye's dedication and technique made it clear that Green Arrow was also a top-tier human warrior and archer.
As a member of the Justice League, Spider-Man didn't expect Green Arrow to lose.
"The same move you lost to last time? You'll lose again."
Green Arrow, expressionless, faced Hawkeye's charge.
Though their physical abilities were similar, this time, the Green Arrow clone had more countermeasures.
For example, Steel shared his perspective with Green Arrow, analyzing all of Hawkeye's angles and identifying dozens of openings.
The clone's vision highlighted Hawkeye's vulnerabilities in red, connected by threads, like a visual blueprint.
Green Arrow attacked along the threads, ferocious and swift, wind surging around him.
Hawkeye's pupils contracted. He realized the angles were too cunning to avoid, leaving no opportunity to resist.
Bang!
An arrow struck his cheek, instantly swelling half his face.
Green Arrow followed with a kick. Hawkeye groaned as the force surged through him, sending him flying.
Boom!
He crashed into the wall, blood at the corner of his mouth, glaring at Green Arrow, unable to move.
Hawkeye knew any movement now would send him toppling.
Undeniably, he had lost to Green Arrow again.
The shame and anger were indescribable. He wished to crawl into a crack and disappear.
The building fell silent.
Not just S.H.I.E.L.D., but even some Justice League heroes were stunned.
Minutes passed.
Everyone exchanged glances, hesitant to speak.
Clang!
Suddenly, glass shattered, like claws ripping the calm.
Two figures—a tall one and a short one—entered the building.
The tall figure was clad in black, eyes wide with whites showing, teeth sharp and menacing. Fear radiated from him.
The shorter red figure needed no introduction.
They were Venom and Iron Man.
Venom nodded to Green Arrow, immediately taking his side.
Iron Man, Tony Stark, stood with Nick Fury.
The two factions were now clear.
"Reminder: Batman is here!"
Venom's low, deep voice echoed.
The threat and malice he radiated made everyone uneasy.
Only the Justice League remained calm—they weren't the target.
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s faces fell.
Partly due to Venom's killing aura, partly because of his words.
"Batman is here!"
Where?
Whoosh!
A shadow appeared.
Batman had arrived!
"Nick, with me here, you won't take the psychic transfer device."
Anton, embodying Batman, stood beside Green Arrow, calm: "Since you've tried, consider this your final warning. If you want to escalate, think of the consequences."
Boom!
A figure crashed through the ceiling above, shattering it.
Suspended mid-air, the tall frame came into view.
It was Steel, a Justice League member who had defeated the alien Lang.
Nick Fury sighed internally, realizing S.H.I.E.L.D. had no chance.
Without Batman, they might have contested the device.
But with Batman, Steel, and Venom pressing down, S.H.I.E.L.D. had no choice.
They could only allow the Justice League to take the psychic transfer device under their watch.
"We're leaving."
Nick Fury paused, then turned to his agents.
"Return to headquarters."
"Understood!"
The agents exhaled in relief.
Coulson helped Hawkeye to his feet.
Natasha, slightly recovered, came to his side: "Barton, next time, maybe challenge Green Arrow differently."
"How?"
"Try a shooting range, see who's more accurate. At least then you might get a tie."
"..."
Soon, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team left TCRI Tower with the leftover Foot Clan.
Not everyone left; Coulson stayed to handle follow-ups.
Nick Fury and his higher-ups split into two teams: one to interrogate and jail the criminals, the other returning to their New York base.
Anton and the others watched them go.
"It's over."
Spider-Man breathed a sigh of relief.
The tension inside the building had been suffocating.
S.H.I.E.L.D. weren't villains, but they clearly had a competitive or adversarial stance toward the Justice League.
Spider-Man was uncertain how to react.
Daredevil and the Turtles remained calm.
Daredevil had little interest in S.H.I.E.L.D., while the Turtles only acknowledged Batman.
Venom, Eddie Brock, wasn't bothered.
He knew Anton's plan and looked forward to what would happen now that the Justice League had the device.
Eddie also held grudges against S.H.I.E.L.D., knowing they'd once had evidence against the Life Foundation but hadn't acted due to political reasons.
He understood the cold, merciless nature of these so-called lawful operatives—sometimes worse than villains.
"All right, I know some of you may not care, but I should explain why the psychic transfer device cannot be handed to S.H.I.E.L.D."
Anton turned to his team, nodding to Steel.
