Chapter 96 - The Proper Use of a Heroine

"Are you sure this thing even works?"

Selene frowned, eyeing the constantly spinning compass in her hand with clear skepticism.

It was already nine at night, and right after finishing some… basic human needs, she'd been dragged out again to do manual labor.

As a Death Dealer, a proud vampire warrior sworn to hunt lycans, she should never have been cooperating with a kidnapper like him. But after seeing what had become of Michael, Selene decided—for now—it was safer to play along.

She wasn't afraid of death, but Michael's current state looked worse than dying.

Just the thought of ending up like him made Selene shudder.

After all, a goddess might bleed and cry, but if other fluids started flowing, the whole tone of the movie would change dramatically.

So, she resolved to feign obedience—wait, observe, and strike when the time was right.

If she could just escape back to the manor, she could regroup and counterattack. Whether to save the mentally shattered Michael or to settle the score with this insufferable man, it would all be a matter of time.

Of course, Selene had no idea that her vampire stronghold had already been blown off the map—and that two of the three elders were dead.

"Of course it works," Li Qingyuan said confidently. "Now focus—picture where the lycans are gathering."

The compass was an artifact he'd brought from the Pirates of the Caribbean world—field-tested and proven reliable.

Sure, it couldn't lead him to divine treasures, but for anything below god-tier, it was frighteningly accurate.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for him.

His mind was too complicated. Every time he tried to use it, the pointer would twist and turn, leading him straight to the nearest beautiful woman instead of the actual target.

So, if he used it now to locate the remaining werewolves, he'd probably end up lost—or worse, distracted.

But who needed to when he had the perfect tool right beside him?

As a Death Dealer, Selene was born and trained to hunt lycans. All she needed was a slight nudge, and she'd lead him straight to every surviving pack.

"If I help you find the lycans, you'll let me and Michael go?" Selene asked as the compass needle began to slow down.

"I'm a man of my word," Li Qingyuan said cheerfully, clapping her on the shoulder.

Honestly, exterminating both vampires and lycans completely might earn him some bonus reward—but Budapest was huge. Even if he nuked the whole city, a few stragglers would probably survive in the sewers.

So why waste the effort? If he couldn't hit 100%, a near-perfect score would do. Letting Selene live was acceptable.

After all, he was a good guy now—and sparing the heroine was what decent people did.

Selene rolled her eyes, glaring down at the wandering hand that was sliding down her arm toward places it shouldn't be. She really wanted to pull a gun and remind him to behave, but unfortunately, he'd already confiscated all her weapons.

"Stop spacing out and focus! Find those wolves!" Li Qingyuan scolded, giving her a not-so-gentle squeeze.

Time was running out, and if this woman slacked off now, even being the heroine wouldn't save her from a rough wake-up call.

"It stopped," Selene said through clenched teeth, glaring daggers at him. If she weren't disarmed and drained of strength, she'd have happily shoved a bullet up his nose.

"What's going on over there?"

They drove toward the direction indicated by the compass. As they passed through a collapsed district, Selene frowned.

She had lived in Budapest for centuries—she knew every street by heart. That neighborhood had been perfectly fine just yesterday. Now it looked like a war zone.

"Gas leak. Pipeline explosion," Li Qingyuan said flatly.

It was the kind of excuse the authorities would use anyway. Perfectly reasonable.

"Gas explosions don't take out entire blocks," Selene muttered, shooting him a cold glare. Did he really think she was stupid?

"Less talking, more tracking. Which way now?"

"Left!" She glanced at the compass again and saw the needle shift slightly.

"So, all I have to do is think about where the lycans are, and this thing magically points the way? That's not scientific at all," she said, suspicion rising again.

"You're a vampire talking to me about science?"

Li Qingyuan gave her a sideways look full of disdain. Was she serious right now?

As they neared the train station, he frowned. "Why is it so quiet here?"

He parked the car and scanned the eerily empty platform.

Just the other night, even past midnight, there had been people around. Now, the whole place looked like a haunted house.

"This is the old train station," Selene said irritably. "It's been abandoned for years. Of course it's empty."

She raised her restrained hands toward him. "Maybe you should untie me. If we're really going after lycans, I'll overlook what you did earlier."

When he didn't respond, she raised her voice. "I'm a trained fighter. With me helping, you'll be a lot safer!"

Li Qingyuan turned at the entrance and grinned.

"Do yourself a favor and stay put. Pretend to be dead if you have to. If a stray werewolf catches sight of you right now, you'll just end up as dinner."

"You insufferable man!"

Selene cursed, curling up in frustration. In her current weakened state—left foot and wrist cuffed to the car—she couldn't even fight off a stray dog, much less a lycan.

So, for now, the safest thing really was to stay still and make no sound.

Seeing her finally quiet down, Li Qingyuan shook his head and walked toward the station alone.

He knew Selene could handle herself. With her help, hunting down the remaining lycans would be much easier.

But he had already come dangerously close to wiping out the entire vampire race.

Honestly, if he weren't scheduled to leave this world after the mission, he probably wouldn't have spared her either.

He wasn't like those brain-dead villains who always let the protagonist live—just to regret it later.
